Newbie Blackpool
Hi guys we have been muddling through with a pond we got with the house and have decided to try and understand a bit more about what we should be doing after a koi we purchased has begun isolating and is looking a bit unwell. We have lost a few fish over the three years and don’t want to lose any more so any advice would be appreciated. It is a concrete lined pond which I understand is at least 30 years old. We have an oase 10000 litre pump with skimmer a oase 16000 filtoclear and a cloverleaf air pump. The pond is an irregular oval with sloped sides and deepest part is just over 50 cm. We have an old koi (?) which is brown with tiger stripes on bottom who is around 25 years old and we have bought some other babies since we arrived in total we have about 15 koi and some other fish including a sturgeon. Not sure if overstocked for size of pond, under filtered etc any advice appreciated thanks paul

What's the volume, the depth? Looks quite shallow.
Have you got any means of testing for ammonia, ph etc

Hi it’s around 50 - 60 cm deep at deepest part but that is only about a foot across the middle before the sides begin sloping up. I have a water testing kit but the weather is not pleasant!! I will go out and do it now... :-)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I think the recommended depth is 1 meter for koi, I have kept them in 80cm for many years and they have been fine, I'm not saying its correct but it worked for me, the bigger the volume of water the better off the fish will be, my old pond was about 4m x 3 m and 80cm deep
For the volume of water that you have you are probably overstocked, do you keep the filters running through the year and how often do you clean the filters out?4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger

I did mine every week but I had bigger fish so more waste, you are probably about right on cleaning your filters,.
If you can go deeper then that's the way to go, the bigger the volume of water that you have then the any problems with water quality will be diluted, the pond will also hold a more steady temperature and you fish will be happier
My old pond was also under a tree, it was about 10cm from the trunk and the roots of the tree were pushing up the liner, it was a pain all year round4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass

Thanks for all replies it is much appreciated. Contemplating raising sides of pond to make it deeper to save having to dig out the concrete base but from reading it may be the base is not strong enough for the extra weight/pressure of additional water or should I just bit the bullet and start again, any thoughts? Also managed to get a picture of the koi who was isolating and he has a friend this morning. The little one appear to also not be well but he has obvious cotton wool type fluff on him, any thoughts?? Thanks in advance

Thanks ajm would probably never have put a pond in but love the bloody thing now! Unfortunately as I suspected it is not really deep enough for koi so need to try and get higher water Volume and more depth.

There may be a forum member or 2 who might be able to come and have a look for you or a local koi club you could join up with and get some advice from there.
I had a similar conversion with a chap yesterday who’s just got rid of a fibreglass garden centre type pond as all his fish had basically frozen during the winter. You defiantly need to be deeper. At least 1m, IMO 1.5m is about right. Then you’re into some more serious construction, more suitable filtration etc.
Raised scales sounds like dropsy?
