As a general rule your pond build will cost you somewhere between £2.50 and £4.00 per gallon, depending on how much of the work you do yourself and whether you buy new filters or second hand. So your budget is really not going to stretch to creating a koi pond. Before you start, it would be a really good idea to join a local koi club and go along to some meetings and ideally pond visits. Also, there are some big koi shows on this summer that are well worth a visit. You will get chance to see and touch some koi pond filters, which are nothing like the rubbish seen in the local garden centres. The question I generally ask newbies who have yet to start down the koi road is "are you sure you really wanna do this?"

Cleaned up the compost area for the filter to go(shaded area) to reduce green algae
Planned where we are gonna put the pond and what on to stop it sinking into the dirt. We’ve decided the filter can go into 2 4x2s and the tank can go on some slabs
The dirt get wet from rain but not drenched like my friends where the water will just sit on there .
Slabs with the underside being a gravel based mix for drainage incase any water sits on there.

So when my filter box/tanks here what should I do with it?
like how you lot reckon it should be cut? Top off or top half off?
what media should I fill it with?
Should I also run a UV light to keep water clear?
i need as much help as I can get really
your saying my budget isn’t ideal? What If I get the pond built for free ? That’s the plan my old mates a bricky other mate does fibreglass I’m a labourer so that the pond built physically, now tell me what’s gonna cost me 1200 pound? For a koi pond minus the fish.
I just can’t see me spending 1200Last edited by Armanib; 20-04-2018 at 06:01 PM.

I think you are drastically under estimating how much building materials cost. Bags of cement, sand etc don't come cheap and you will need blocks which again are an added cost.
If you want to go down the koi route it would be a good idea to join a club and go to some proper dealers to see they types of filters you can get. Again everything is a at cost. £1200 won't get very far. You will need pumps, media, pipework, UV.
Are you planning on using this tub for your pond? And are you going to insulate and clad it?

That's what I need some decent advice I can work with.
This £1200 bit was just to get the ball rolling on advice on 1200 ok we're on budget lets get the best for him for his money
Lets start out with I'm going down the container route for now what do I need to get that started
I'm gonna go down the gravity fed route for my filter system
Hopefully there's 2 there so 1 can be my filter housing
What do I need to fill my container with? How should I plumb it all up? Etcetc
I'm not stupid I'm just not in the know with ponds and filters

You will need to keep as much volume as poss in your tank so cut the top off as high as you can.
You will need a bottom drain and a core drill to that size of 3 or 4 inches. You could use a jig saw but it won’t be as neat so you risk not getting a seal. The BD will probably need to be one for a liner so you can bolt the bd and flange together with loads of silicone so it’s tight on the bottom of the tank.
There was a blue barrel DIY filter and a Tank QT system done by a couple of guys on here. I’ll see if I can find them as that’s the way you will need to go.

You could get an easy pod fairly cheap second hand and then use a couple of moving K1 barrels after to help with the bio.
So you would gravity feed to the pod, gravity feed from the pod to the barrel/s ( the top of the barrel water line would all need to be kept the same as the tank) then a tank connector of two between the barrels then a tank connector and pipe from the last barrel to the pump then a uv if using then returns to the tank.

Well how they explained it as a 1000L tank he may have more, so I’m thinking a open lid tank that I can use as a outlet?
But I now get how gravity fed tanks works thanks to the earlier thread. Thanks

I think you’ve asked this before and were advised not to keep koi in an IBC tank.
They’re used for home made filters or keeping small fry to grow on before they get transferred to a proper pond.
They’re not suitable to turn into a “pond”.
If I’m understanding you correctly you want to keep fish in the IBC and add a filter made from a wheelie bin?
Totally inadequate.
Find a book called “koi kitchi” by a chap called Pete Waddington. It’s a bit out of date with regards to modern filtration systems but the first principles it describes are still relevant.
Study every page, that will really help.

We have tried to point you in the right direction and you seem set in your own way. If you can’t afford a filter which is the basics there is no way you will be able to afford to build a pond and keep your koi healthy.
Maybe goldfish is more appropriate.
Sorry to be blunt but I’m being realistic. I’m more concerned about any potential koi you want not being provided with an adequate home/care than sparing feelings.

Its not that i cant afford it, I just dont wannabe sent on a wild goosechase spending all kinda money, that ends up in low quality koi with dull colours.
So I want it reasonably cheap setup to make sure its all looking fair with no disadvantages in colour etc then ill go all in
So cheap but koi level cheap if you know what I mean
£100 For that book , Thats surely a disadvantage to a new koi keeper.
