Skimmer to drain
Hi all.
I've been reading and learning loads on this forum.
I have a question.
I am about to start digging.my plan is 4 inch bottom drain into a midi sieve, gravity fed them pumped to a anoxic filtration system.
Can I have a skimmer in the block work gravity fed into the same pipework to the sieve as the bottom drain or should I have 2 sieves and pumps.
Any help much appreciated.
Regards
Wes.

I asked the same question when I was building mine
It can be done but not advised,as you'd have to have valves on each line to balance the flow and probably wouldn't work
Be better 2 lines
BD to your suggested filters, then skimmer line into another filter, lots of people use a easy pod for their skimmers as they can be had cheap 2nd hand
Also a few convert their skimmers to 3" for maximum flow
Hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks for the reply pal.
Do I really need to filter the skimmed water or just sieve it then pump back in.
I'm presuming with my anoxic filter and pre sieve this will be enough....obviously it's a learning curve as well.
Thanks again for the help.

Hi Wes
On my skimmer I just put filter wool in the basket and then it gets pumped back that does the job, only did it this way as haven't got the room for a another filter
A sieve sounds like a good idea tho
All depends on the size of your pond, stocking levels and how much your going to fed,you can never over filter
If money's no object a drum filter is the way to go

Morning ghostdog.
Money is a issue and space.
I want a decent size pond but am limited for space with big filtration systems obviously I know I need filtration so that's one of the reasons I'm going anoxic, I get the aesthetics of the plants as well in a separate pond.
I have managed to work out a plan where I could sit a easypod and sieve though and also my anoxic at the opposite side.
My worry is having to have a fair long run of pipe work from my bottom drain sieve then over to my anoxic.....will this matter as long as my pump is big enough in the liters per hour?
I understand you get losses on pipework as I'm a engineer, I'll try and keep the elbows down to minimum, or would you use flexible possibly buried in a 110me solid.?

Wes.

How big a pond are you planning mate?
I don't think the BD pipe runs will be a problem unless they are stupidly long and the return pipes will be ok
Just use swept elbows not 90 degree bends
There's the on going debate over what pipes to use, pressure vs waste
As long as there installed correctly and solvent welded I can't see a problem with either.
I don't know a lot about anoxic filters, apart from the bigger the better
If your pond size is going to be on the limit of a easy pods capacity i'd look for a 2nd hand nexus 220
I think the problem with a long BD Pipe run is that you could get quite a lot of crap sitting in it over time
So a lot of people(not me)put a sump in,so this collects the solids and this is pumped to waste
As long as your pumps powerful enough I'm sure you'll be fine

Hi.
Sorry I've explained incorrectly.
My bd is a short run to the sieve then from the sieve and pump pushed about 9 meters to the anoxic filter .
The skimmer pipework I can keep the pipework short.
I thinking of bd gravity fed To sieve then onto the anoxic.
The skimmer gravity fed to either a sieve or a easypod then back into pond.
Pond size 2.3 meter by 3 meter by 1.5 deep about 9000 with my anoxic added.
Just on with the dig now.
Hopefully get some concrete in before Xmas .

Have fun digging mate
Me and the Mrs dug 22 ton out for ours all carried through the house as haven't got any side or rear access,If your skimming by gravity you'll need to mod your skimmer to 3" or 4" to get good enough flow
JBR plastics make these to order but they are not cheap

Skimmer to drain
With your measurements it will be a bit bigger than 9000 litres
It comes up as 10350

Yes pal your correct, I've given you external dimensions.
No bother.
Can you recommend a reasonable priced 4 inch BD.
Where to get one etc.
I think I'll use standard underground4 inch pipe, it's gonna get encased in mesh and concrete so I'm sure that's good enough.

Wes.

Hi mate
I think the one feline has got on here is the best for reliability as it hasn't got the small piece of hose to connect the 1" pipe to the dome( long story, see my build thread)
And have changeable diffusers on them
Their jäger diffusers
And are like this

I'd wished I'd seen those before I started my build
As now mine has failed it's nothing but a pain to sort
And £40 extra for being hassle free is nothing

Hi again....brilliant, thanks for the help.
I need to get a drain bought so I can get the base in soon before the weather changes.
Is the one on eBay for a concrete base with pond liner?

Wes

I'm not sure mate you'd have to contact the seller, but looking at the pics I'd say it's for a liner as its got the flange to sandwich the liner in between

The full kit listing can be found here:
FULL INSTALLATION KIT FOR AERATED BOTTOM DRAIN FOR KOI PONDS INCLUDING PIPEWORK | eBay
...but the description is more detailed in the 'non-kit' listing of the same drain:
AIRATED BOTTOM DRAIN FOR KOI PONDS | eBay
...wherein, it is stated:
"this drain comes with a clamping ring and stainless screws so that it can be used with a liner as well as concrete."
So, it looks like it may be well-suited to your requirements, Wes, but please do contact the supplier, just to absolutely confirm, prior to purchasing!

Hi thanks again guys.
I haven't had a reply from the guy which asked me if I wanted to buy one yet.
I've noticed those spin drifter ones on eBay as well.....what your thoughts on those. Between the two which would you buy?
