Why are plastic bowls so expensive?

    Hi
Is there something about the various plastic Koi measuring bowls that makes them so expensive?
You can pick up various plastic bowls, buckets, moulded designs that are much cheaper.
For example this was in my local Aldi shop

    Blue Plastic Bowl.jpg

What is it that makes the blue plastic Koi bowls so expensive?
    Regards
    Peter

    Yep, definitely this.

    Every hobby is taxed.

At a classic car show on Sunday, spotted an engine bay cleaning spindle brush with long handle.... Thought ooh, perfect for cleaning the outside of the easy section of the nexus, price: £22

A grit guard - basically a plastic disc with holes that goes in your car washing bucket so grit off the sponge falls to the bottom of the bucket..... £18.99

And don't get me started on "M-Tax". I have an old M3 and EVERYTHING is quadruple the price of a normal 3 series. Little tin bracket for the headlights (they snap after a while), normal 3 series = £12, M3 = £58, Normal 3 series service = £380, M3 service = £1600. Outrageous!

Recently discovered the same with water purifiers, Koi Dealers way more expensive than normal plumbing supply places for the same product.

There are bowls and there are Koi bowls.

The heavy, deep traditional bowls are virtually indestructible, the cheaper bowls will last a good few seasons but don't like abuse.

Been after a 1m traditional bowl for a while now - new circa £400!!! Out of my range - Denby make a fibreglass 1m bowl at a sensible price.

Fact is there is limited demand for a plastic tank supplier to produce a product.

    Thanks for the replies.
So there is nothing special about the plastic and I could use any suitably sized plastic container (such as the Aldi one).

You need food safe plastic or fibreglass. That comes at a price since demand is small, as DaveJ says.
If your fish are small then an Aldi washing up bowl might meet your needs. Personally I need a 1m bowl so bought one at a koi show for a fair price with measuring tape.

If you think there is a good living to be made buying cheap bowls and selling them for koi measuring then why don't you do it?

Noticed this a while back but forgot all about it .... https://www.toolstation.com/plastere...ng-bath/p64497

Most of these baths are black and made from recycled plastic mixes BUT this one I noted was made from "Virgin" MDPE (medium density polyethylene) ... which means it is made from brand new fish safe plastic (same plastic used to make many popular commercial koi filters and the "natural" colour means just the pure plastic granules are used in the moulding no additives at all.

    If you don't mind the whitish colour ... it's a big (1200 x 600 x 300mm) tough tub for a bargain price ...

the old koi tax debate, yes its the word koi that doubles the price of anything.we keep chickens, well the wife does, and a 20kg bag of food is £11,and before anybody says well the koi need special diets and theres loads of money spent on research, its the same for any animal feed,so why is a bag of koi food nearly £70 for 10kg,KOI TAX,cos were all made of money lol,i used to use one of the black mixing tubs for bowling, but then i needed it for its original purpose to mix cement in lol,,,,,andi

Same standard marketing tricks as the hifi industry and many others ... the higher price confirms the expectancy that the product is better ... and those who have forked out for it will defend it to the bitter end even though most of the time they know very little about the product apart from the marketing spiel and what the person that sold it to them told them and will recommend it to others ... it's a very successful method ...

These tubs are not just meant for mixing cement/plaster they are multi-purpose heavy duty plastic tubs ... the black one's are recycled as most black plastic products are these days unless otherwise marked and are ideally suited to construction and not ideal for fish (but probably do no harm for temporary bowling). The natural coloured virgin plastic versions are specifically made with new plastic for food and potable water purposes from the same moulds for a wider market and the natural coloured tubs (with no colour additives) are actually purer plastic than the commercial koi bowls.

Check out this link which is for the same product showing the two different versions side by side : https://www.tanks-direct.co.uk/water...er-trough.html

It's maybe not the round shape most are looking for but it's still a great bargain large fish safe/potable water tub for £33 delivered (from Toolstation) ...

One thing is for sure, anything plastic and expensive now is likely to be more expensive in the future!

Usually any plastics with 2, 5 or PP in the triangle marking or a wine glass and fork are good to go with fish ...

I would say to you Andikoi if you think you are being ripped off, then why don't you approach a food. compounding factory with your requirement and have your food manufactured? If there was such a huge profit margin to to made then lots of people would be doing this

Koi Tax is a fact. Like wedding tax. A cake is a cake until it's a wedding cake then it runs you thousands.

Call Chris I got my koi measuring bowls off him and they where so well priced my sales mind couldn't help myself. I went back a month later after asking him to order me another 5 and I sold them all on eBay for a decent profit and they flew out.

Why dont you upscale your business opportunity by renting some business storage space, and employ some staff to help with the dispatching? Before you know it you wont need a day job

Exactly. So accusing the poor people who are doing this for a living of charging 'koi tax' is I think disingenuous at best and frankly abusive at worst. Just my opinion

Well we are all entitled to them but I just don't know why one dealer can make a living charging X amount of money for something yet another feels they need to charge upto 3 times the amount for the same product.

This of course is just my opinion not meant to be abusive but if that's how you have taken it again thats up to you. Koi Tax for me in my opinion which I am also entitled to is a thing.

I didn't mean to offend you if I did I apologise.

Also I am not the only one that clearly stated koi tax is a thing.

Same as scene tax in the car world

Again only my opinion shared on a forum full of opinions where not everyone is right on the internet.

Chris Masters. Koi Masters in Barnsley I got my bowls off him for a song. He will also talk to you about koi tax and mark ups. Got all my superfish RC eco 15000 pumps from him for a price you will not find anywhere else. If this guy can make a living charging what he does then I have no sympathy for the other "poor" dealers out there.
