Why are all the compact sieves pump fed? Sieve questions, help required....
I am gathering parts for my small 1200 gallon pond and I am planning on adding a sieve after my vortex (from Bottom drain) before my DIY filters etc.
All the compact sieves I have found are pump fed. Is that just because they can't handle the entire flow of a larger ponds bottom drain? Or Another reason?
Do you think a compact sieve would handle the entire flow from the bottom drain on my little puddle? Or go larger?
Space could be an issue for me with a larger one!

For sieves to be able to be effectively gravity fed they need to have a floating part so that the weir height can adjust to get the same flowrate as the pump. Some sieves don't have that and can't really be gravity fed

Thats perfect thanks. At least I can forget the idea of converting a pump fed one.

I suppose I could gravity feed everything from BD to vortex with brushes in, then to bio filters to anoxic and then just either pump out of there, through a sieve, uv and back to pond or sieve and uv on a seperate return.
But I reckon I'll have to squeeze in a gravity fed sieve.
Decisions decisions.

Why would you need a vortex and a sieve when just the sieve would do?
Have I missed something? Apologies if I have

If I didn't have a drum I would use a sieve, rather than the vortex.
You could always convert the vortex and run K1 for extra bio.

Thanks for all the advice. I have purchased that exact sieve. There was one very near me but he wouldn't budge past £300, a courier for the £125 ebay one was £22. A no brainer. So that should arrive next week.
I am very happy with that as this is the perfect first building block for however i end up doing the rest of the system.

What make and model sieve did you buy from eBay? The link doesn’t work as the item has been removed.
