Water test Ammonia.
Hi/ Hope everyone is well, Just doing water tests on pond and my pond water has a slight green tinge with algae. Will this affect the reading, making it appear more green? Thankyou

Short answer - "yes".
Longer answer if you want the technical stuff - you are obviously using a Salicylate kit which begins with a yellow colour when you add the reagents and then develops a blue coloured chemical (indophenol blue) according to how much ammonia is in the sample. The blue colour and the initial yellow colour makes green which is compared to the colour chart to give the ammonia concentration. If your sample is already green, the final colour will look a little more green than it would if the water was clear.
However, there won't be a great difference unless the water is "pea soup" coloured and the first reagent will bleach out some of the pond sample colour which will reduce the error plus any remaining error will be on the higher side rather than giving a false lower reading so there's no need to worry.

Thankyou for your reply! What makes it more difficult for me as well, I have problems with yellow and green. Don't know if I'm colour blind or what!

I've noticed sometimes the colour differences between yellow and green is so close so I try to look at it against a white background.
Any hint of green means Ammonia is present even if it is giving you a reading between 0 and the lowest reading for the colour match chart.
These are just my thoughts but Manky Sanke is the best person to give you the answer on this

I struggle reading the water test kits too. I am colour blind (which only applies to shadings before anyone asks if I only see in black and white).
When I had a swimming pool before, I had an electronic test kit to measure the pH, chlorine and alkalinity (I think), which was a godsend to me.
I need to find something similar for the pond really.

Have a look at the iDip from Aqua Source.
Should be just what you’re looking for.
Don’t think Seneye does nitrate or nitrate unless someone knows different.
If anyone comes up with a gadget that does them all and is affordable, they’ll be quids in.

I have a Seneye, but haven’t used it for years! I think it’s good as an indicator of change but not actual readings.
Just found some threads on here with people recommending the Palintest 7100 or the exact iDip. PalinTester is circa £900 whereas the iDip is more like £300. Quite a jump between the two, would be good if anyone could quantify it.
