Stupid idea maybe?
Does anyone use a pump and float switch for their ponds overflow?
My pond is sunken in the ground and don’t have anyway to have a standard overflow. On my old 20+ year old moulded one the water level was a good 6” bellow ground level think I only ever had to bail it out 3-4 times. The new one the water level is about 1.5” from ground level so a lot less of a buffer.
I have an idea to use a spare pump and a vertical float switch. Was going to add an elbow and a vertical length of pipe to the pump so it sucks water from about 6” from the surface so it won’t pump the pond dry should the switch fail.
Do you think that is a doable idea? Just for peace of mind as the pond is at my mums and I know she won’t keep an eye on it as much as I would.

Look viable enough as long as the pipe is high enough like you say in case of failure, possibly put some sort of gauze on the end as well so no crap gets down there?
Is there any reason you could just not run the water level lower to start with like your old set-up?

Because it would look aweful with a huge gap

Just strip the one out the toilet and add a micro switch, sure that will be fine 😂

I put a float switch on my pumps which cut out when level drops by 6". last winter the top of my filter froze on top and bailed water out overnight so that's why I have fitted float

So I got my pipe fittings today and the end cap I recieved (not the one I ordered) doesn’t sit in the end of the pipe. I believe the one I actually ordered was designed to. This one which is actually a better one I believe with a screw cap won’t fit the end of the pipe. I’m assuming I’m either being a retard or I need an extra part I don’t have? If so what do I need and can I get it from a diy place as we only have a Maidenhead here and it stocks nowt. A tad annoyed as I wanted it done over the long weekend .
Also is there a fish safe lube I can use on the thread of my pump? Bloody hard to do up lol

So my creation has worked.....

Tested it out with a hot air gun attached because the pump isn’t at my house obvs the same principle. I preferred to use one of these vertical float switches as they are more controlled and you loose less water by the time it switches off unlike a standard float switch. You have to use a relay in-line that’s what the click you can hear is.
If anyone would be interested in instructions and or where to get the relay and switch etc let me know
