All I can say is whenever I’ve used clay since going to a drum, it’s been cleaning at a regular interval, within minutes of putting in the clay it knocks four to five minutes off the cleaning interval.

Most of the ones I’ve seen have a bypass. They’d have a plug of some kind on the bulkhead between the clean side and the dirty side you take out if the drum motor failed for example.

looks like I may have to give the clay a miss or I may just half the dose and see how the drum reacts

    thank you

    crazreefer,

I have got a drum, I still use clay. I think the benefits of using clay will still be present even though the solids are filtered out of the pond more quickly with the drum. If part of the benefit of clay is that it causes particles to stick together and be filtered out of the water then a drum is going to cycle in a shorter time frame.

Normally I add some clay when I have swept the bottom or sides of the pond, hopefully to put some condition back into the water. Some of the clay will in any case stick to the sides with the algae from where it is consumed by my koi.

I have used clay since installing a drum.
I dissolve the clay and then tip it in slowly under the bakki.
The drum does take it out but also alot of fines pass through the drum (fine clay I guess) so I end up hoovering and rinsing it out.

I was advised thst only breeders secret is drum compatible (no idea why). I've used it with my AEM, no significant change in cleaning but the water did take a good 24 hours to clear, suggesting to me that the clay was passing through the drum...
