two 1000l ibc koiy fry tanks , growing on 8 in each tank through winter

    hi all
the set up i have at the moment for 250ish koi fry is with two fx5 filters , i am learning a lot from this forum (ty very much guys) , my filters are coping well at the moment , i am thinking once i have built shed onto side of tanks to link the tanks with four 50mm tubes , i would like to draw the water from the two tanks simultaneously , and put a sprinkle bar system over the two , reading through posts on here , the easy pod system sounds just the job (ty again people ), i can keep running the fx5 filters on the tanks whilst the easy pod gets cycled or hmmm u know what i sayin hopefully , the external pump should be no problem to set up with with a y branch and adjustable ball valve , i can get the height needed for the easy pod in the shed i build , from what everyone is saying the k1 filter media is best (ty again people ) , i using volcanic rock pocelain tubes and a blue 150 filter sponge , , connectors to tanks i normally neoprine cut to size to make gaskets , if anyone thinks the easy pod will not be as good as the fx5 filters please say , the guy who is sort of helping me with this says i going over the top , from what i have read on here , going with the easy pod is definately not ott

Hi dusty. My qt grow on setup. 450 gallons. has an easy pod at the start of the setup. For machanical cleaning. Followed by 2x 100ltr water butts then a dry pump.
In the bottom of the 100lts water butts I have grock rock. Then 4x layers of jap matting. And in the last water butt I have on the top filter wool. For fines.
The easy pod is mainly machanical cleaning. But I suppose the k1 and helx13
Is mature. And also works as bio.
It takes a while for brand new k1 to mature
You can speed this up by PP the k1 first.
Before first using it in the easy pod.
Hope this helps. Photo s of my setup

cheers fred , hmmmmm i think i got to look into the filtratrion far more closely, with the two tanks linked i around 400 gallons , so the easy pod is far from enough , cheeky lazy question fred , if i buy second hand , how much am i looking at spending , buying second hand , filtration , filtration, filtration , the good lady is only worried about electric bill, so i have a little to play with lol , do you have pump in tank as well , i have a couple of butts spare , , ty again for heads up

on my old QT 450g as daft as this sounds i had a pump from bottom drain going to a blagdon garden pond box filter, had 3 layers of sponges and some ceramic rings in bottom and to be honest it worked well, you could just stick a pressure filter on it,like an fx5 but a lot bigger, how do you manage with the fx5,i have one in shed somewhere i had on a 200ltr aquarium and hated it as it has a built in pump,,,,,andi

    hi andi
the fx5 are coping well with everything at present , there both fitted with the bigger pumps so both pushing round 2500 lph , but not enough area for media , compared with what i have seen and read on here its minuscule lol , all but 16 of the fry will be leaving mine when they are 4-6" which is going to be a bit quicker than first thought , then i might keep 4 of the 16 to grow on for another year , might have something to do with me looking up tosai and seeing some beautiful koi , hmmm this has turned into me helping my friend out to bring some fry on , to me getting the bug , i have bred and grown on fish for years in the past , but seeing the beautiful specimens around the 8-10" has 100% won me over , now the filtration is the first thing i have to address , i like freds set up , looks very simple but very effective , the fx4/4/6 i have run for years on tanks , takes a little while to get used to them but when you get them working right i find them great , but i definately going bigger and more on the filtration and linking them

On my QT set up I have gone for an Eazy Pod gravity fed from the bottom drain (BD) then to a 200 litre or 210 litre barrel filter which will have 100 litres of K1 in when I get it up and running then may see how much K1 I can get in the barrel filter and still get it to boil nicely even if I have to get a bigger air pump. Fred's set up has 2 barrel filters and is also using an Eazy Pod gravity fed from the BD as a pre filter. I think his BD is a 2" and then he's running 2" pipe work to the Eazy Pod? I have a 4" BD which then is reduced down to 3" pipe work to my Eazy Pod so will be interesting to see how the two systems compare. I only went for 3" pipe work as I had a few bits left over and didn't want to buy 4" pipe and fittings seeing as one of the fittings would have been a ball valve which I think are best part of £100

Don't know too much about multi bays but have heard they can be good but a pain to clean sometimes.

Is that close enough for you to collect as it says collection only? Looks like you may need a fairly big car or van to get that lot in

    Pardon I didn't hear that

There are no stupid questions but you may get some stupid answers LOL

The term boil is what is referred to when using air in an Eazy Pod, Nexus, multi bay, barrel filter, bio chamber or similar to clean or keep the bio media churning over so it looks like it is boiling not using boiling water to clean the media

If you want to clean your used media then use PP or bleach then a really good thorough rinse before sticking it back in your filter.
