UV and Green water
Hi guys,
Ive had a search and cannot find an answer to this question I have so am asking it now.
My pond was crystal clear, until the sun came out and now its green. I understand why and I cant stop its exposure to the sun (and dont want to), and im planning on getting oxygenating plants to help combat algae along with the UV filter I already have.
My question is - if the weather went cloudy for say a week, would you expect the UV filter alone to kill off the algae that's appeared? Obviously on hit days the filter isnt stopping it entirely so im wondering if it would catch up? IIve tried a flocculant as well and added a barley bag, but is there any other recommended additives for combating green water thast you can recommend?
Thank you
PS - Is it worth adding a second UV filter as well?

Ok its an 11w UVC and a 2000 litre pond. The UV is in one of these all-in-one units (PondXpert 6000).
I know the pond isnt big enough (found that out on here when it was too late) however I can easily increase its size next year to 4 times the capacity. Im also in the process of making a much better and bigger filter - so dont rip me for pond size and current filter arrangements please .

Do you know when the UV bulb was last changed . I could be wrong but I think the rule is some thing like 10w per 1000 liters but dont hold me to that . As for pond size 95 % of people on here have to to redo ponds to make them bigger . I started with an old barrel and built up it's all learning mate and if you can 4x ya pond you are on to a winner so good luck

The filter is brand new, all less than 2 months old so doesn't need changing yet. So given plenty of overcast/ rainy days, do you think the UV filter I have will catch up?

What make is the UV. And does the water run through it. Or is it above the water.
Like water in a tray. And bulb above.
What is the make of the filter with UV in.
Then maybe we can give you an answers.
Reason I am asking is my first filter 24 years ago had a UV above a tray full of running water. And it was a waste of space.
So I changed my outlet to a normal UV on return to the pond.

This is the unit - https://www.pondkeeper.co.uk/pondxpe...0-evolve/p3776
the UV is inside the box and water runs through it.

I just don't think the UV is big enough for the job but could be wrong. It says 3000 lt with goldfish imo that means 1000 1500 proper money they are never what they say imo . With the over cloud as you say you may see a slight change as it's given the UV a fighting chance but if its underpowered the second that sun pokes its head out you'll have the same again . Ment to be big heat wave coming aswell

I once had a Blagdon Inpond All In One 9000
And that did the job on my old pond. For a while. Until I bought proper UV

you uv isnt big enough and neither is the filter, but as daft as this sounds and cant believe im saying it you may be better buying a used box filter with built in 15w uv and piping from your filter in pond into the box filter then let that run back to pond via gravity, this will also add oxygen,if you want to use treatment then i can reccommend aquasource blanketweed resolve,,,,,andi

You need to go for a lie down Andi...you said the BF words!!
My dad had one of those on his pond which was a similar size and it worked ok. Needed cleaning out loads though and he only ever had goldfish.
Did a job though.
For the OP, you have to remember that with a small volume of water things can go bad very quickly as there’s not enough water to dilute any issues.

Had a box one first filter I had it worked with Careful management feed water change ect . Even just to get you by till the upgrade . To 4x your current volume will require a big filter upgrade nexus or drum sort of area

I have just bought a 20 litre bucket which im going to pump into from my fountain T-pipe (which has already been filtered by the built-in filter) through 5kg of Zeolite for added filtration. I think I have decided on getting an additional stand-alone 11w UV so the water passes through that as well. Hoping that will do the trick .

That's a start Bobby. But why don t you pay a little more. Say a 50w UV.
Then if and when you upgrade your pond
You will already have the UV. And won t have to spend again on a larger UV for the larger volume of water mate.
Why spend twice when you can spend once. Cheaper in the long run mate

Hmm maybe I will. Only issue is I need to get the wife's approval and £30 for an 11w one will go down easier than a more expensive one, although I haven't checked prices on one as high as you mention, which I will do!

I was under the assumption that second hand UV's were a waste of time as the bulbs are only effective for 6 months (ish)? Is that a myth (hopefully lol).
Im Manchester based btw
