Siporax or anoxic?
I’ve been having a think about adding more biological filtration to the pond as all I have is a bio chamber with K1. I’ve had a good look at different types of Bakki rivers and I think this is the way to go for me, the main reason I am not going for a bakki shower is purely down to it making too much noise as my outdoor seating is right next to the only spot it could go.
As the concept is relatively simple I’m going to DIY it and looking at ideas, the river will run along the coping stones on the side of my pond next to the filters as I can hopefully have enough room to add plants to the top of it to add a bit of colour and hide the filters behind it. I’ve been looking at garden planters / troughs and reckon I’ll get a couple of them linked by a tank connector something like this below
Dims 33x32x70cm
The original plan was to fill it with siporax but now I’m wondering if I should make it anoxic but not sure if I have enough surface area to make anoxic work effectively?
Any thoughts anyone?

Sounds like a good plan Skoosh and I think it would look great.
I watched a video on one a Yorkshire guy forgot his name and it looked ok.
Not too sure on the anoxic but you could put plants in there.
I use these

As tank connecters makes a good seal as long as it is tight enough.John

Isn't Siporex the stuff with glass on it?
A couple on here said they wouldn't use it but I have no experience with it.John

The anoxic would work a treat I reckon and you can plant it too so best of both.
1 basket per fish plus a couple for luck if you have the room.
If not, a slow running “river” with either grog, pumice or even some Japanese mattting. (Grab some of the compressed stuff off Ian at Evolve).

you can get showers with a spigot so it returns underwater, you could put something like CB or pumice in the river as it will be constantly submerged,,,andi

It is formed using a combination of glass and salt then heated to get rid of the salt leaving the internals extremely porous. I think the Yorkshire man your talking about could be a guy called ‘Wrighty’ and he has made a diy siporax river which is working well for him, he does great videos and builds all his filtration himself including a RDF and is clearly a very good craftsman. (If that’s not who you were thinking about you should look him up, he sounds like a great guy).
Not sure what people don’t like about it as I haven’t heard many reports about it TBH but the guys on YouTube including Adam Julyan use it over K1

Adam Julyan has quite a few videos on bakki rivers https://youtu.be/ehKR2RlomWI

Having read through MS website again about anoxic I think I’m going to have to go for siporax. If I made up the baskets as per MS instruction I would only get 4 baskets in which isn’t going to do a great deal as I have about 12 fish...

If going to DIY why not make from ply and paint/seal the inside.
Maybe one sheet of 8x4 would do and make as your own design.
Mind you I like Adam Julian's one and works well.John

I did see a cheap plastic welder and thought of giving it a go but I’ve completely changed my mind again, one of the two returns from the drum goes straight back to the pond, I’m going to re route it about 6m into the garage where I reckon I have space for an IBC that I could fill with baskets for anoxic filtration. Just trying to figure out the logistics of it and making room for the tank. This better not turn into a Frimley QT build
