Does your drum work ok in winter?

    Evening All,

Looking to upgrade my filtration system that has been on my pool since day 1 ..... 14 years this year , it has been great, all in fashion at the time.

Gravity System - Aerated 4 inch BD, vortex in which i fitted an Eazy conversion going into 8ft 3 bay fibreglass filter pumped to UV then returned by 3 mid water pipes in pool wall.

The only major issues i have encountered were during cold winters when on one occasion I had a burst pipe due to freezing.

Now i am looking at putting in a drum filter, prices have come down & they all appear to do a good job, however having read several PDF manuals from different manufacturers they all give minimum water temperatures at which the drum should be used & advise that the drum be drained and packed away during the winter , obviously this is something that I would not want to do.

So how do you get on with yours in the winter, use of salt is also a no no , as is use of chemicals also stated in operating manuals.

As part of any planned filter upgrade I would also like to build a filter house, adequately insulated, but have no plans to heat my pool.

    Cheers

Which drum manufacturers are these then put of interest?
I’ve an aquasource and can’t see anything in their instructions to that effect.
I’m also guessing that all the installations I’ve seen where the drums are located in an outside filter out are still fine else we’d be reading about them on here every five minutes. (Everyone likes a social media moan when things go tits up eh? )
I’d have thought that providing your pipework isn’t in danger of freezing up and your electrics aren’t going to get wet then they should be pretty bombproof. There isn’t a great deal to go wrong with one in reality, just be sensible.

If you're building a filter house then I wouldn't worry too much. The liklihood of it freezing in an enclosed space with pond water going through it to keep it warmer than air temps is extremely low.

My filter house teens to be a bit of a heat trap even in winter- it's always a few degrees above pond water temp anyway. I keep all my dechlorinator units and RO system in there and has never been anywhere near close to a worrying temp.

As a. rule, moving water is less prone to freezing.
I woul get a drum with decent level sensors to be safe. Any unexpectedly low levels on clean side and it turns off. Mine sends me a text too to tell me its done that as I have dealer gadget plugged in to one of the drum sockets.

As said a filter house should eliminate the risk of frost in the drum. I plan on building a cover over my filters but haven’t got round to it and not sure if it will be done this year. Last winter I did suffer with the drum water freezing to a degree on the surface but I threw a poly sheet over the drum and bio chamber which worked a treat and kept it ice free for the remainder of the cold snap, you could make a custom fitted sheet to make it less unsightly. As Big Carp says my drum doesn’t state anything about the actual drum having to be relocated in cold snaps it only mentions the drum controller which I have extended and put up in the garage. I wouldn’t see the point in moving the filter inside in the winter the logistics of it would be a nightmare and would mean you are left without mechanical filtration for months?!?

R’s covering at its finest I suspect.
I bet there’s a good number of Oase users in here who wouldn’t do that. Extremely Impractical and another reason to buy something that’s half the price and just as good
The local “World of Water” has Oase stuff outside on a big pond all year round FWIW and it’s been there since they came on the market.
It’s the branch in Reading so might be worth a call to them if you’re thinking about buying once and have concerns??
