I used to use it occasionally but I can't say it ever did anything apart from cost money and make me feel like I'm doing everything I can for the fish.
I could possibly see a argument for it if you run a RO system hard but your probably better off buying beer to sit and enjoy your koi with.

Where are you based. Water quality is a factor. In Yorkshire I always struggled with sumi fading. Spoke to my dealer who is also in Yorkshire and he advised it was our water and supplied me koimasters advantage. Not a clay but a treatment water additive.
It's magical stuff. After a couple of uses the black became solid and proud. Really great for the skin and water is crystal clear when it's run through.

I have halved the weekly dose though as the water was cloudy for 2 days on full dose.

Good info from Syd as usual
https://koiorganisationinternational...ing-clay-ponds
Dont tell anyone but Bentonite clay is also known as Fullers Earth- available as cat litter £1.89 for 10Kg (enough for 400,000 gallons)
http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/lidl-...tter_10Kg.html
I find it breaks down well if pre-mixed before adding to pond although some types did need grinding in an old coffee grinder.
Keep it under your hat, mums the word
