    Fines

my pond has been running for 9 months now and still struggling with fines and water parameters. I went for a sieve and bead set up for a couple of reasons but not 100% happy. having researched i am going to try and add a floating skimmer, use some filter wool on the screen of the sieve and get some clay into the pond. I am hoping these will help with the fines

I also need to look at reducing the nitrate and nitrites other than just water changes and may look at getting some better plants in the small top pond to help with this.

pond is 12k litres with a Midi sieve, EB50 bead filter, UV then back through underwater returns and to top pond split 50/50

thanks, corrected now! i am thinking the same, just need to decide on which clay and skimmer to buy now!

i have just added a piece of filter wool to the screen of the sieve and the amount of stuff it has captured in the last 20 minutes is amazing. although at this rate the wool will need changing everyday

What pump you using through bead and is it beads in it or k1.thing with beads is a big pump to push the beads together to catch fines.a lot of beads have been changed to k1 and it just doesnt work.....andi

aqua forte variflow 20,000 and the bead is filled with micro K1.

since cleaning the bottom drain pipework yesterday the flow has increased the fines are much better even with just 24 hours of running. i have placed a piece of filter floss on the sieve screen which has removed loads of fines. (replaced the floss about 5 times since yesterday lunchtime as they were clogged full).

i am hoping that the current setup along with the clay might be OK. i still think a skimmer would be a good addition but as i can only really do a floating one the pro's and cons don't seem to warrant it.

You could put japmat over screen instead of filter wool.this will last longer before clogging and you can clean it.it will collect finer fines as it gets dirtier aswel....andi

It certainly seems to have helped mine, not guaranteed that it will anyone else’s! It can’t be bad to put the minerals into the pond anyway.

The sieve has definitely collected more material in the last few days so assume it is the clay bringing the smaller fines down to the drain
