    Jbr skimmers

I have a jbr skimmer and was just wondering if anyone has altered theres in any way.
The plate that the water runs through has three slots I have blocked of the bottom two slots as I only really want to draw water from the surface.
My skimmer goes to the drum along with the two bottom drains so water being drawn from below the surface means less draw on the bottom drains, and also less from the very surface for the pond.

As this seems to draw alot better with the two bottom slots blocked off I thought I would order a blank plate from jbr and cut my own slot.
    What are peoples thoughts?

Modified mine for the same reason, my water level is up between the third and fourth inlet, had to cut the inlet between third and fourth and remove it completely, then had the issue you have.
Two lengths of 15mm conduit, 30.5 cms long, run a cut in a straight line the full length, then followed by a second cut 1mm along side the original cut, (A multi tool is a god send) clean any sharp edges on the ends.
Using the cut you have made, fit it over the bottom inlet, either side so half the conduit is on the onside the skimmer, the other half pond side, it can also be adjusted to up to the next grill as required, I did two of the inlets, skimmer works much better.

Do you have a picture of what you mean? I’m having this trouble just now but was thinking of creating some sort of weir with a flap of rubber so that when the water level drops the pump won’t run dry

Cut a slit along the length of th pipe and fit over each skimmer inlet as required.

Would a float switch mounted in the skimmer box to turn the pump off should it run dry?

unlike the OP I can’t easily change the inlet due to a course of bricks and the copings

I did the complete opposite and added and extra slot for more pull.
Was working a treat prior to the pond failing.

Yes mine draws alot but not just from the surface.
My skimmer sits alot lower than the one pictured above also so have slid the face plate up slightly.

Where did you add the extra slot, do you not find it doesn't skim efficiently as is drawing from under the surface more.
Also in my thinking the more I take from the top of the pond the less draw there will be from the bottom drain which means in my books not as clean.
Or have you got this on a separate filter or pumped

I did try unsuccessfully to solvent weld some plastic over the bottom 2 slots but they came off eventually

My my water level fell between slot three and four, so was not drawing from the surface, so cut the plastic out from between three and four making three a bigger slot.

Skoosh why didn't you gravity it into the drum? I've got a 3" pipe out of mine straight into the drum.
I was thinking of just getting jbr to send me a blank and cut a straight top and then cut shallow V rather then the original straight slot.
If your pump feeding it may suit you better too as if water level drops it's still draws a little

I also get the same problem with food rolling around in there.
I was thinking of putting a plastic sheet in a vee type shape so it channels the water to the 3" pipe.
May try this tomorrow with an off cut of twin wall roof I have over to see if it works.
I haven't fitted the basket either just run it without.

When I ordered the skimmer I wasn’t thinking and they gave me one that had a 2” outlet and I had a spare pump so thought I would just pump it to the drum plus when I get myself sorted out I will put it on a timer so that the air turns off and the skimmer comes on for 30 mins or so as I don’t feel the skimmer needs to run 24/7. Yea your right a ‘V’ cut may just do the trick

Yes get where you coming from with a time timer as even with one drop from the feeder a little ends up in the skimmer as it clears the surface quickly with the lower slots blocked up.
I have just taped the lower holes up temp with gorilla tape and its stayed on there fine.

I popped my extra slot in at the top, my water level was over the first 3 slots so had done “room” for another one at the surface.

A floating facia plate would work the best here as it would adapt to the water level, there is no point having slots under the water as it defeats the idea of skimming the top surface. There must be a mod available for this.

Did a little mod today increased the size of the top slot and cut a strip of twin wall to make a V flows much better.

Think your right, not sure if anyone has done one yet.
Have to wait anyway for me need to make a cover for the filter bay first.
