    Air pump and UPS questions

Hopefully I'm asking this in the correct area?

I was reading an article on Manky Sanke's website about the use of aeration to increase the surface area of a pond.

We get a fair amount of power cuts where we live even though we aren't out in the sticks. So what I was thinking was if I used a UPS to power my air pump in case of a power cut how bigger UPS would I require to power if for (to be on the safe side) 2 days? If I was to try to have the UPS run the pump as well that may require a considerably bigger UPS obviously so thought the best solution would be just have the air pump on it.

Firstly is this a feasible option?
Would it be better to try to run the pump as well as the air pump?
If it can only power one item for that length of time which would be best?

Initially I thought air pump as it would still be moving water around just not through the entire system or main pump which may require a bigger UPS to do the job.

Has anyone on here got this type of thing or has experience with it?

It is not quite in my line of work but I have the basic understanding of how it works just not enough to make the correct choice maybe as I'm guessing a UPS isn't going to be cheap? £100? £200? more?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Hi Frim,

You need to know the power usage for the equipment your planning on running.
UPS are not cheap for the requirements you need.

Just grabbed this of the web:

    CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD

Input voltage: 230 Vac | Output capacity: 900 (watts) | Outlets: 6 | Battery runtime: 10 mins (half load), 3 mins (full load) | Recharge time: 8 hours

Try this link to get an idea of what you will need:

OK thanks. that's a useful place to start.

Am I right in thinking that if a UPS will run 100 watts for 1 hour then it would run 10 watts for 10 hours? Or does it not work like that exactly?

Charge time isn't an option as although we get a few power cuts I'm not talking 2 or 3 big ones a week maybe 2 or 3 short ones a month some times so it should be charged and ready all the time.

Do they need to be discharged every so often to keep the battery in a good condition?

Sorry I think that should have been - charge time isn't a problem.

As it is going to be sat in a garage or shed is changes in humidity going to be an issue for a UPS?

Correct, you have 100watts of stored power that can be called on when needed

We tend to replace the batteries every year on our server, its a 500watt ups and its used most weeks due to the office location, the batteries are about £20 each and it takes two, they can run the server for about two hours, when it reaches 20% charge it shuts the server down. They detect power loss and cut in automatically and are trickle charging when required

I threw about 6 away a few years ago, only small apc's 90watts I think, they just needed new batteries, never got round to doing anything with them so I got rid.

I'm not sure I would use them now either, I would keep my compressor charges and use the 50 litre tank to keep things running for as long as it lasted

Been thinking along similar lines but thinking of going down the generator route, that way I can run all the pumps, water and air.

Talk about good timing lol the place where I worked yesterday morning a guy offered me a 1000 VA UPS that just needs new batteries and then the second job I went to the guy works for a company that does computer stuff and offered me a new one at 70% off

A while ago I was thinking about a generator but thought the silent running ones were probably silly money and the standard ones would be too noisy so never followed it up.

I have a spare UPS if you need one.

Its 65000000 VA, or 65 MVA.

Little on the heavy side mind, around 76 tonnes.

Can post pictures if you'd like to see it before collecting

As long as you don't use DPD as the courier service let's go for it RS.

Actually I was given a 1000 va APC UPS end of last week but it just needs new batteries.

Thanks for coming to collect it so swiftly Frim, glad its gone to a good home.

Like I said, I'm sure it will go through your front door without any problems

If running an air pump from it you might need to put a cover on the pond, you know, just to try and keep the water in....

Just hope Rawcliffe are better couriers than DPD. Although I doubt if even DPD could kick that round but may explain why other boxes are getting a bit squashed though.

Forgot to ask does that come with a 13 amp plug or one of those silly little 2 pin euro things?

OK I'll have to fit a socket with a USB outlet on it then. Just need to check to see if they do an IP66 rated one so I can leave the lid open so if it gets get it will dry out fairly quickly.

Well that's Fred's theory anyway LOL
