Thread: Gravity skimmer

    Gravity skimmer

Can anyone give me an example of how they are plumbed?
    Imaginary set up is a
-gravity fed nexus from a bottom drain
    -Dry pump after nexus.

i think the nexus would be beside where I would like to fit the skimmer.

    Thanks

just remember with gravity fed the filter top has to be same height as water level in pond,bd feeds nexus inlet then pump is attached after nexus outlet with pipe then pump pushes water back to pond,i wouldnt advise plumbing bd and skimmer into nexus if thats what your thinking, its a nightmare to get them pulling water correctly, always better to have skimmer to seperate filter or just use basket in skimmer for large debris and pump rest back to pond,,,,,andi

andi is right in what he is saying. if your going to run of the one meaning nexus. and say an ultra sieve or cetus sieve on skimmer. you would need a balance line and 2 pumps one larger then the other.
and I believe the one that is larger is after the nexus. here is a photo of what I mean. as andi said it can be a nightmare to get the balance right. if you are going to run two into a nexus only. your skimmer needs to be on a filter to get maximum out of it. that's why myself. I run the draco nexus on one line. and my skimmer ultra sieve on a separate line. a lot simpler. hope this helps fred

if you need photos of two seperate lines. line 01 meaning nexus bottom drain nexus uv water shute pond. then 02 skimmer line to sieve pump uv return via tangible pond mid returns. just reply and ask and I will put some on here for you.

    Thanks guys,
Yes I kind of thought running a BD and skimmer into the one nexus would be a pain.
I would say a sieve is out of budget but you never know......

I respect others opinions, but I run a BD and skimmer into a single filter and it works perfectly.

4" feed from both skimmer and BD, both into their own 4" ball valve. These both feed into a rubber T, which leads into the filter. I run the BD valve 100% open, and open the skimmer valve enough to get a little flow.

My pond is about 8K litres, water clarity is perfect, bottom of teh pond NEVER has any muck on it and the skimmer... skims.

It may be different for bigger ponds, but I run a 12K pump and I really doesn't need more flow.

    *edit to add*

A few years ago everyone generally said it was a bad idea, run 2 filters etc. Now, many people run BD & skimmer into a drum and don't think twice about it.

in 3 years I've had zero problems, and no build-up/ settling in any of my 4" pipes.

    Hmmm,
I definitely will not be running a second filter at the start, but there will be room for it.
Thats interesting Mitsufishi I might try that.
Anything to look out for in a skimmer ? prices seems to vary a lot .

think the difference with both into a drum is they normally have their own 4" inlet,i run 2 small drums and thought about adding a second inlet but scared of cracking plastic while cutting lol,as for skimmers it depends what you want and how you build pond,i had an in wall skimmer but always thought the square hole wasnt big enough, now i have a wide mouth one that i think are better,,,,andi
