oxygen exchange
I read on several places that oxygen is not exchange while the air bubbles travels through the water from the airstone to the surface, but that the oxygen exchange occurs only on the surface because the surface is moving and the air bubbles only serve to move surface ( i often read it on facebook groups).
So it confuses me now I have a small pond, if i hold airstone in a pond then i do not see the fish because the surface is moving consrantly.. so I moved the airstone into one chamber in my filter.
Air in the chamber travels half a meter through the medium before reaching surface , in that chamber the surface is small.. if this exchange happens only on the surface does this mean that i have very little oxygen exchange

Mirza,
The exchange of any atmospheric gas including oxygen occurs wherever there is an air - water interface (where water and air touch). In non aerated water, the exchange occurs at the surface. In aerated water the exchange at the surface still happens but the bubbles cause the flat surface to become "wrinkled" which increases the surface area and this causes a greater air - water interface with the potential to cause a greater or more rapid exchange. (Potential because no exchange can take place if the water is already saturated with all atmospheric gasses).
As to the bubbles themselves, there is obviously another air - water interface as they rise to the surface which has the potential to cause a more rapid gas exchange.
The increase in the total air - water interface when water is aerated is surprising and I wrote about this effect on my website in this article:
