Easypod modifications
Hello all, I wondered if anyone has made any modifications to their Easypod to increase mechanical filtration at all? Adding some jap matting to the outlet or a fine mesh cylinder to the outlet ring to help with removing fines at all ?
I know I could use a filter sock with a not so dense/fine micron (as these capture fines quickly and very soon block up).
Has anyone else used any other methods to increase/improve their Easypod at all?
I am gravity fed to Easypod and had a moving bed after pod and pump return, finances are not big so whilst I save up to upgrade I was wondering if there is anything small budget wise I can do/offer in the mean time.
Here is a pic of my pond.IMG_6615.jpg

there was someone on here who designed a disk to go on easy section that compacted the k1 to collect fines better, think he was selling them on ebay, andi

on my Grow on i have one of the disks and i put an end of a pair of tights over the center metal pipe, at worse it gets a little slimy after about 7 days but its never clogged and the vat is gin clear always
** Edit..... its gravity fed, i wouldn't even chance it if it was pump fed!

hi, i done all this 2 years ago with two aqua pods . jap matt on top of the k1 and in the end i got a drum . i was cleaning the filters every 3 days to get the muck out and no joy in doing it .its took me 5 years to get to this stage that i am at now , if i look at what i spent over that time in bits and bobs , its a good holiday .

Hi, thanks for the info. My budget is limited so I cannot afford a drum right now and would take me possibly a year to save up due to circumstances.
I was looking at options to help increase mechanical filtration and reduce fines, then one day having saved up enough money I would upgrade to a more affective mechanical filtration system.

I've got one of the discs in mine but I don't really rate it all that much as I find it doesn't make it easy to get the K1 really clean. It is a pain to keep removing it if you want to give the K1 a really good stir to get rid of all the muck in it. Jap matting may be worth a try.

Thanks for that info as I was considering getting one of the discs and adding a few more litres of k1 to the pod, keeping the media compressed and covering up to the top of the grill.
Could look at adding some jap matting to the centre of the pod on my return, I think it could need a lot of cleaning out in the summer.
I Have no idea how jap matting works in terms of thickness, fineness of the matting and where to get it from at a good price so I will do some research.

same here frim it does not take the fines out good enough. I have took my disc out. I found when I put the disc in. I had to take some media out for it to boil as good.since removing it I have added more media k1 and helx.
it was doing a little better with it in. but it was the cleaning side of the media. why I removed it.

Does the disc not work so grate if you drain the pod ever so slightly and then boil media? I don’t suppose using k1 micro is much different either?
I am looking at adding 10-20 litres extra of k1 and the possibility of using jap matting inside internal ring but this could clog heavily quite quickly so may need changing often.

you could always stick a few brushes in outer chamber, seen this done before, andi

don t get me wrong it does improve the catching of the muck. but it s the cleaning side of things. it is harder to get full max on the air boil cleaning. tried all the lowering of the water. my easy pod is on a 500 gallon QT grow on tank.
which is not as bad as when I had 2x easy pods on my old pond. what I have on the QT grow on is 2x 100lt water butts and on the last butt I put wool on top of the jap matting. this for me on my grow on. does a far better job.
on my old pond when I had easy pods. I used to put jap matting in the tube. and wool at the exit pipe to my waterfall. this did a good job. for the old days. but needed a lot of time. on the cleaning side. but it works. now on main pond I have a draco drum nexus 320. also as andi quoted I tried brushes in there as well. they helped.

Easypod modifications
When i used to run a pod i used the cut piece of jap matting like alot do. It did work better but did become a chore pulling the matt out to clean the pod. I cut the matting to the circumference of the inner chamber, then cut out the inner outlet circle, made 1 slit from out to inner on the matt and wedged it in the top ontop of the k1. The idea been to compact the k1 and make it tighter and in theory catch more crud if that makes sense (i ended up cutting the matt disc in half so it was easier to remove when cleaning, it still held in as was a tight fit).
Surprisingly the matt never chocked up but it did need cleaning. Thats mainly because in an easypod the water doesnt flow up and over to the outlet as such because it flows through the grills horizontally. The inner grills allow water threw to the outlet over a vertical area which means the matt or disc doesnt take all if much of the flow.
You do have to remove it when cleaning though as the only way to clean out the muck is by getting a good boil over on the k1 so its best to have the water level as high as possible, just before it would spill the k1 over the overflow chutes and down the outlet when boiling. This then allows the k1 to free up and let out all the crap trapped between it etc... cleaning it while compacted will do pretty much nothing.

Thanks for the info I appreciate it.
I don’t suppose you can recall the size of the jap matting you got can you ? Diameter wise and thickness?
I may look into this and add it to centre ring with k1 to compact it as you have said as well as on the centre ring with jap matting being placed vertically in that circle to try and reduce fines exiting in to my moving bed filter. If needed I could add the Perspex disc to help compress k1.
Might be worth a try as I save up for an upgrade filter system.
10 x litres of K1 media is approximately £23
Jap matting £9
Perspex disc £40
Hopefully it improves Easypod mechanical filtration in the mean before any upgrade in 12+ months.

The Jap matting will do the same job if not a better job than the disc and would be easier to remove for cleaning.
What I do is as the K1 is boiling just push the disc up and down a few times and that helps a bit with the cleaning but not as much as it would if the disc came out completely so you could give the K1 a bit of a stir with a stick or a bit of thin pipe etc.
Taking the disc out completely requires removing the overflow and that's held in with self tapping screws which I'm worried that if removed and refitted too often could end up stripping the threads if that makes sense.
If you can find out the size and thickness of the Jap matting required to fit between the underside of the overflow and the K1 when compressed you could use the some of the £40 you would save from not buying the disc and spend it on the Jap matting.
Sounds like the price of the disc has come down a bit as when I bought mine about 8 months ago it was £49 but that may have been including P&P?
What I found most annoying about the disc is that it comes only just enough nuts. I bought some extra nuts so I could double nut the disc and the handles etc to help stop the thing shaking loose very quickly.
On another topic - I just looked at your pond photo today as I saw this thread and replied before via my phone and now I'm using my laptop - is there an air gap between the cover and the top of the pond walls? I only ask because I read a thread on here a little while ago where someone had covered their pond, not left enough of an air gap and basically suffocated their fish. Didn't want you to do the same thing.Last edited by Frimley Koi keeper; 14-01-2019 at 06:51 PM.

Yeah it looks like I have some measuring up to do and possibly some templates from cut out cardboard, this may give me the opportunity to basically cut out a giant polo in jap matting and then half it so it can be removed for the cleaning process ?
My pod is gravity fed via UV inlet so if I add jap matting horizontally like a polo in the red area and then more jap matting stood vertically in the yellow section then it may help before exiting the pod via central return pipe.
Maybe the additional k1 will help too.
Yeah sorry it was a ruff guess but I think the disc is £49 with P&P.
Yes there is gaps under the timber frame of approximately 5mm, there is a constant air supply to the water via Venturi nozzle and oxygen from my moving bed filter. IMG_6667.jpg

Good to hear there's a gap
Sounds like a plan with the Jap matting. I may try some down the centre section of mine as it's easy to get in and out of there plus the lid just lifts off

That diagram/picture you have done is exactly what i was trying to say mine was a polo shape piece of matting in half to remove easier.
I have jap matt in my bay so i just used a left over piece of a full 2m x 1m sheet i think it was. Its not true japanese matting either. Its cheaper softer stuff in black colour i have along with some true jap matt which is blue with bit of yellow etc in it and very wirey /stiff.
Not sure what sizes you can pick up but you wont need alot. 1m2 would leave you a fair bit of wastage. Try ebay
