    Skimmers and drums

    Hi all
I have been out of this for a while and things have moved on a fair bit!

I was looking at swapping my nexus out for a drum and have been looking at the Oase drum (4500 gallon pond)
What do people think of them?

Also I removed the skimmer and want to put a new one at the other end of the pond, there isn't a lot of room behind the pond the wall is concret block layer on there side is there a good skimmer that I could cut into the wall.

    Thanks simon

    Hi Tony
Why would you avoid this, had a look around at different drums and they seem quite tidy in construction.
That drums would you recommend and why?

i can only comment on 2 drums because thats all ive owned, i had a draco and now have a queni koi drum.
The draco did a decent job, dropped straight into the vortex of my multibay and you can get one that drops straight into the nexus, they work well. There seems to be some reports of faults of them, mine always performed spot on but the build quality wasn't great.

I just couldn't get enough flow through my filter with the draco drum, so I went for a stand alone queni drum, its in another league all together, out of the 2, although the draco is half the price, the queni is much better value.

Thanks for the input, I'm looking really to replace them I have the two 220s one from each bottom drain going through a flow friend pump and through a Bakki shower at the moment.
I will have a look see what I can find on the queni drum.
I haven't got a lot of room. So think if I replace the nexus with a bio chamber it will have a smaller footprint.

Hi Sim,A lot on here have gone for the Queni drum as it is a good price but i cant comment about them as i have the Draco solum 25.
A few also have the Aem which had a few faults to start with but a very good price.

The reason i went for the Draco was because it is made a couple of miles away from me so handy for any parts and back up if ever needed, and it is made in Britain.
I sold my nexus 300 and kept the k1 and made a bio for it,as you have two bottom drains and fitting a skimmer you could do with a drum with three inlets preferably.
I dont think the Oase has very good wright ups and quite expensive i think.
Hope this has helped you a bit.
    John

I have looked a reviews on line and didn't really find anything negative about the Oase drum, though as you say it is slightly more. Gary at Gatwick koi is using them in the shop and hadn't had any issues.
The queni drum can come with a bio chamber which comes as one unit, if I get them separately they seem to be diffent depths which means I will have to build a platform for the drum, is this correct? Is the built in bio a good option.

I have a queni drum and a jbr plastics bio chamber, I am very happy with them both and you can get the bio chamber made to your own size.

It also depends on what you want to spend. I have a profi drum Eco and for me it's working brilliantly. I have been looking at German made inazuma drums. These seem to be in a league of their own. If I ever change my drum, I'd look to get one of these. Not cheap though.

Wow just googled the inazuma drum that's a lot of cash for a drum.
I was trying to keep the cost to about £3000 ish and I really need that to include a bio chamber.

    Hi Tony
I have a yumi shower running at the moment from the two small nexus, being pumped by a flow friend which I turn down in the winter.
I have to remove the nexus to make room for the drum so still wanted a bio of k1 or simular.
I had looked at the Oase drum as easy to install and they have nice easy controllers. Some drums seem to be fiddly to set up and wire in.

How's the drum working, did you have the uv fitted in the drum?
What do you think of the jbr skimmer have you seen them?

    Hi Tony
Thanks I will call them after the new year.
Have you seen what there skimmers are like, they look quite well made?
Also the uv perhaps I could fit one later if your not using it much, part of the reason for fitting one was to help keep the screen clean. I don't use mine all the time now either and could just have a heat exchanger on that loop.
