Drum filter pump
ello all, as you probably know ive rebuilt pond and have 2 x kc10 rdf's fitted,1 on each BD,anyway ive noticed since fitting that our electric usage has shot up,we have smart prepayment meters as we dont like bills and can keep track on things, everything we have is low wattage except im now finding out for the 2 drum wash pumps, which ive found out are 550w each kicking in now 3 times per hour, our lass doesnt like this extra cost of about £25p/m or £300 p/a, so im wondering if i can do a draco and use solenoid valves and just use the mains pressure which is quite good,so anybody with a draco tell me if it works ok on mains,or anybody else running theres straight from mains,my drum motor is 12v so could just wire into this so when drum activates the solenoid open, cheers peeps, andi

Hi Andi, I mentioned this a couple of days ago but Feline thinks it is a waste to have pure water going down the drain, anyway i have a Draco solum 25 running straight from the mains.
Not sure how you convert yours Andi but i am sure you can do it,i put an isolater valve in front and i have loads of pressure and i even turned the pressure down a bit to save water and still get loads from six spray bars.
It has been running nearly 12mths now and no film on the screen and personally i think it is the easiest solution not saying that because i have it but a few are having probs with their pumps.
Let me know if you want any more info Andi.John

as you know andy I have a draco in my nexus 320. and I don t use a pump. I run right from the mains . I have had mine now for near on 2 1\2 years. and it has been very good. I did a bucket test before I decided to not go with a pump.
and like john says cleans it great. I don t clean it anymore. I used to when first installed it. for about 6 months I used a pressure washer. but then I relised I did nt need to.

Hi john and thanks. I know its sending clean water or fresh water down drain, but as im not on a meter i dont mind lol, plus as will not be dechlorinated im hoping it keeps screens clean.its simple to do i just cap off the clean outlet for pump and connect a solenoid valve to inlet for spraybar, then just wire this into drum motor supply.found these on fleabay which should work. Hi Andy
I have a Draco on main pressure too, no issue for me, cleans 4/5 times an hour. I’ll pressure wash the screen twice a year..just to be sure all clear of scale build up..

Andi,
Careful with your sizing, the item you pointed to is 1/2" - 1".

Hi kenny its 15mm or 25mm theres 2 sizes of it.also ive noticed that its 220v so i can just plug into pressure pump outlet on control,or i find a 12v one to use from drum motor as planned.andi

Andi,
At 12 volts I wouldn't think so, the pump specs say - 100mbar at working point. The pump on my drum is 4 bar so that is what you need to aim for. Mains water is 10 bar coming into your premises (at least that is what they aim for) so there is some merit in using that pressure (less what you lose by reducing pipe sizes through the house) to clean the drums directly using a solenoid or two. It may cost in to run a larger pipe directly to your drums from where it enters the premises. Costs of your plan are mitigated by the mains water cost if you have to pay for it.
I suppose there is a cost you have to pay to have your pond water cleaner than it has ever been.
