Dry pump recommendations for new pond

I’m in the process of buying the equipment for my first koi pond, approx 3,700 gallons, 7’ x15’ x 5’ deep. Gravity fed nexus 220 feeding into a smaller 350 gallon upper pond, planted out, then via a waterfall to the main pond. Any recommendations for a suitable pump? Will also be running a skimmer To probably a sieve or easy pod once money allows! Recommendations for uv also appreciated.

hi mate my pond sounds similar to yours my pond is round though. 4000 gallons. main pond 6 feet deep upper pond about 400 gallons planted out. this runs to a shoot waterfall into main pond.
I have 2 lines skimmer to returns with a 8000 pump. and on my bottom drain gravity fed draco drum to a nexus 320 a 15000ltr pump. it probably pushes around 12000lts allowing for friction loss and bends.
I believe a 220 is maximum 10000lts an hour flow rate. so allowing for bends and friction loss. head height . if you went for a 12000 or 15000 pump you would nt be far out. you can get them variable flow pumps with a controller
so if you went larger flow. you can control the flow. remember though that you won t get what it says on the box. you will lose so much. like my pump I lose say 3000lts on my pump. so as I said. 15000lts in reality is 12000lts on my pump. hope this helps
    fred

Sieves and Eazy Pods come up very regularly on ebay and you should be able to get an Eazy Pod for under £200. Not sure on the prices of sieves though but depending on where you are in the country I have got a Cetus Sieve that I'm thinking of getting rid of if you are interested? I'm in Surrey not far off the M3 junctions 3 & 4.

Sounds very similar to Fred's so he's your man for ideas there.

Forgot to add that my nexus return is to upper pond then shute water blade to lower pond.
This year winter. For the first time.
I have put another line in.
Alongside the upper pond into main pond. And shut my upper pond down.
To keep the cold water from flowing in.
So it runs directly in the pond. As i am not heated. And put a cover on for the first time. And its working.
1c tempreture last night. And pond is 10c tempreture. This morning.
I am sat in my conservatory and i am looking at the pond window.
And my fish are active and feeding.
Normally with these temps there on the bottom of the pond. Result.

Thanks for your advice, I’ll assume with pump losses that 15-20% should be taken off the stated pump output, handy to know when checking specs, any suggestions for a reliable pump manufacturer?

Hi mate Jebao variable speed pumps. Is one that a lot use now.
Heres a site you can look at in england for comparing prices.
Absolute Koi-Koi Supplies - Koi dealer - Koi Ponds - Koi Pond Supplies
Then just look around and see if you can find it cheaper. I have bought quite a bit of gear from them. If you click on pumps they have all sorts of makes .

Here is a link for a variable pump, make sure you click on UK warehouse and top rgt uk pounds, good pump and can be used dry or submerged, would go for 15000 or 18000 and good on the electric.
Where are you in N Ireland?
Originally from Belfast myself but now in N.Wales, got a brother near Ballyclare.

    Reference to picture 3 lol

You are supposed to fill the pond up once it's built not as you go along or were you checking to see how much you needed first

Yes Northern Ireland is a bit of a trek from the M3 so looks like I'll be keeping the Sieve a bit longer now then lol

Just be careful when you are buying the Eazy Pod from people off of ebay as the one I bought a few months ago was different to what was actually advertised as in the photo showed some fittings attached to it that weren't there when the Eazy Pod turned up. Apparently they were old photos of it Also if the one you are getting has got media with it make sure they bag it up properly as they didn't on my one and the bag split and filled the insides of the Eazy Pod with K1 and required being hoovered out to get every bit of it out as it got into places where the media doesn't want to be.

    Good luck with the build.

The more tight elbow type bends instead of swept bends, the more height you need to pump up and the overall length of the pipework all have a bearing on pump pressure losses plus if you have a UVC or a heater etc. in the pipework that will have an effect too. So 15% to 20% may be a starting figure to work with so if you get a decent variable speed pump you may need to over spec the pump and have it running at 50% rather than a smaller pump running at 90% to 100%. This will allow for additions in the future too as most people find they need to upgrade or alter something a year or so after they get the pond up and running.

Aqua Forte DM Vario is also another well priced pump to look for and the do 10000 lph, 20000 lph and 30000 lph versions.
Superfish and Pond Expert do the same things but may have more versions?

If you are feeling extravagant there is things like Flow Friend and Eco Blue both are really efficient but very expensive
