I would like to know the answer to that to. Thinking the same thing. If you watch the shower video by the pond digger on YouTube I think he says it’s better because it doesn’t have a hole in the middle which completes the nitrogen cycle due the anaerobic or aerobic bacteria, whichever one it is..

I’m also thinking of going for the biohome ultimate. About £270 for 20kg but sounds like it is worth it. Then put 10kg of pumice in the bottom tray.

Would Crystal Bio media be an option because I think they use it on the Ogata koi farms

I had same issue with cb,it erodes in showers, then i heard a few people saying there koi been flashing but nothing on scrapes, seems the cb breaks down to glass dust and gets in water and into kois gills and irritates them,no cb and it stops,i checked my shower and it had worn itself into the corners and was lots of dust, andi

I've seen no evidence of flashing/discomfort for the last 2 years, and no evidence of any dust anywhere, but it must be going somewhere.
I won't be buying any more due to the potential costs of continually renewing it.

I guess you could replace it with any other shower media?

If you’re on a budget try alfagrog, people swear by it. That stuff won’t erode, not in our lifetime anyway

I have pumice in my shower, id rate it, it has a good internal structure (like an aero) .make sure you rinse it well before you use it though as there is a lot of dust.
I have the biohome sintered glass stuff in a canister filter on one of my tanks, it is good stuff but it is really expensive, id probably use pumice over the biohome tbh purely because of the price.

I have loads of Alfagrog in my new shower but i put this thread on as i heard Pumice is better.
Received 10 kg of Pumice from q/k today to see what its like, very dusty and to be honest it doesnt seem to have a lot of porous holes in it but too wet to wash it and put in the shower so maybe tomorrow.
I really rate Alfagrog as i have used it for years and it is so cheap and cheerfull and does the job.
So will wait and see what the Pumice will do.John

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
