    Dechlorinator units..

Hi Everyone I was looking for dechlorinator units that would keep up with what I need on my new pond and there weren't many about but was pointed to some on absolute koi that are meant to be very good. So I was considering them but before I blindly spent my money I decided to ask someone I know who may know a bit more about all this.......

I have a friend who is a commercial window cleaner and he uses a reach system that relies on RO water as they don't squeegy the windows after and it's the only way you don't get streaks on the glass. So I got on everyone's favorite social media site and I asked him how they do it. Apparently they use something called DI resin that comes in fibreglass containers the resin is very good at water purification but doesn't last long and is very expensive! 1l only lasts for about 500l of water and costs £6.50. So for me changing 7000l of water per week at least (maybe double and even triple this in mid summer!), this was not going to be financially viable, but.....

He looked at the dechlorinator units on absolute koi I was looking at (I sent him a link) and said "that is the vessels we use!" ...Apparently they call them DI resin vessels and you can get them in many sizes up to 63L. He also told me you could probably get them much cheaper elsewhere!

So I looked elsewhere at prices and even the 63l container/vessel is only £95 plus of course 63l of activated carbon to put in it, but I can get a 20 kg sack for £40. So £140 gets you a 63l vessel and 20 kg of premium activated carbon (not sure exactly how much kg of carbon equals in liters I was told 1kg is 20l but that doesn't seem right to me..)

In comparison Absolute Koi are charging £280 for a 40l (biggest they do) vessel with carbon in it and £135 for 25kg of carbon for refills....

To be fair they do have prefilters but they sell them for around £25-30 for chamber and filter.... I think (you may get a fitler cartridge when you buy the chamber in which case it woud be cheaper) so you could just buy one of them and make the rest up yourself for less than half the price!

So just to let you know you can get the vessels and carbon much cheaper on everyone's favorite auction site, probably elsewhere as well so I'm now going to look and see if I can get the prefilters any cheaper!

Hope this helps and saves people some money!

Interesting. One of my next purchases is a good quality or rather a reliable dechlorinator, I cant seem to find one that I can trust to give me the trickle I need, I got the EA 30 which is 4" x 30" carbon filled but the flow rates are well off the recommended values, so this is something I will need to get sorted pretty soon

Be careful where you buy your GAC from. A few people have been stung buying what appears to be the right stuff on fleabay only to find it was no good, and in one case raised the pH of the pond inexplicably (without removing chlorine).

I have bought from this place before https://apcpure.com/product/charcoal_activated_granular
Their stuff is all properly certified so you know what you're getting. It's the proper granular stuff not pellets which you don't want for the big blue canisters. You also don't want powder as it would go straight through the cage on the end of the pipe inside.

I ordered 2 sacks to get free delivery so have enough to last me at least 2 years

They also do sodium bicarbonate and sodium thiosulphate.

A little off topic but I buy my Sodium thiosulphate and hydrogen peroxide from apcpure.

The only to get the right one is to get your water checked, I have an allclear water purifier and yes they are not cheap! But I know it’s the right one for the water we get where we live, either contact Gary at Gatwick koi or Anne at all clear.
