Pressure filters and flow rates
Hi I am currently building a 15000ish gallon pond and was looking at pressure filters, they do a model that they say is capable of cleaning 50,000 litre heavy stocked koi pond but the flow rate is only 13,000l per hour but isn't this too low?
Btw. I was thinking of getting 2 and running one on the sump and one on the skimmer using 2 separate variable flow pumps like the aqua forte 20,000lph pumps

Sure you mean 15,000 gallons? That’s pretty much an Olympic size swimming pool lol
Step away from the pressure filters, pretend you haven’t heard of one.
Let us know the correct volume (gallons or litres)

I would scrap the pressure filter idea. They are totally unsuitable for a koi pond of any volume.
Start by looking at your volume and stock - this will likely dictate a total pond turnover rate of 30 mins to 2 hours max. From there you start looking at filters that can deliver that flow rate for you whilst having the bio capacity to cope. Pressure filters are best repurposed as a flower pot IMO- would not even run one on a tiny wildlife pond.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Pressure filters are okay for aquariums but even then they lack the bio capacity to do much, personally I wouldn't consider one at all, if you really want to keep koi then you need to look at other options
4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass
2100 mm x 710 mm Infinity Window 32mm thick glass
2 x Aerated Bottom Drains and Skimmer
Filtreau HiFlow 30 Drum Filter
Bio Chamber - 140 litres K1
Bakki Shower - 30 KG Sakura Far Infrared Media
2 x 18,000 lh pumps
Heated from house boiler through a heat exchanger

Very wise idea mate as said pressure filters as sole filtration are definitely a massive NO for koi. Especially on your planned size

Please don`t consider a pressure filter,Promise big, deliver nothing but a pain in the backside, foams block & cages collapse, you`d be taking it apart nearly every day,not a fun job in the winter. Also avoid anything with foams.

Thanks alot for the advice everyone. Definitely not going to be using pressure filters now! I'm going for some drum filters with maybe bead filters or moving media boxes then a shower.

Best place for a pressure filter is in the bin. Avoid them.

Have you started to build the pond yet?
15000 gallons will cost a hell of a lot in treatments when you need them and heating if you plan on going down that route. Also catching the koi will be a challenge to say the least.

Blimey,15000 gallons isn’t a pond,it’s a lake.Start filling that up & the water company will think its got a leak. You would need one hell of a filter set up for that.

Yes the pond has been started the tree that was there has been removed and all the turfs have been removed just waiting for a friend to lend me a digger to dig it out I think I've got that coming 10 days time

Pressure filters and flow rates
John out of curiosity bud what type of pond are you building/creating? Sounds like you may be going thee ol naturel? In ground linered/clay lined? Or built and fiberglassed? Just a curiosty bud thats all 15000 uk gallons is a big pond and will not be cheap to run depending on how you do it there is plenty of big ponds out there though. Im sure kevin ellis main pond as an example is 22,000 gallon? I may be way off the mark there though lol
I just find the thought of pressure filters then jumping straight to a drum set up was a huge switch lol its the price difference thats the biggest difference ha ha but it really is the best way of doing it

Yeah I know it's a jump in cost but you need what you need and to be fair I was going to aim for 100,000 litres so I could keep a huso but I wanted to keep the shape I've done it in so I could have a bridge and a section that has a high flowing current somewhere and I ran out of space so 15,000 gallons it is which is on the limit for huso so I won't bother, maybe a hybrid if it's smaller! I like my animals to have a fair bit more than what they absolutely need!
I'm using 10mm reinforce concrete in the ground then block above which will be rendered which is also reinforced with plastic mesh to smooth it out, then coated with aquacote. I May do a layer of fibreglass with aqaucote as the top gel coat...but apparently it won't be needed!
Aqaucote info
Pond paints, Pond liners, Pond sealants
All the floors are contoured down to the 3 bottom drains I'm having which I will be aerated ones from JBR and I'll use them to push surface particles in to the 3 skimmers.
4" piping gravity fed
Found shower I like now aswell called a lantern style zacci shower and have contacted Zac about one!
Only things I need to sort is a good dechlorinator but have been pointed to some that people use on here they do a large that is supposed to flow 600l an but I doubt it will so I may need 2 and to up the pressure on my mains water but that's all work in progress I may just try and make one!
Also need some sort of moving media box but have know idea where to get one for what I need atm. It would be nice to make my own if I could!
I'll ask the forum what they think in a bit when I've finalized a few other things I want to get this dechlorination issue sorted first only thing worrying me a little bit atm.Last edited by John The Fish; 26-07-2018 at 12:11 PM.
