carbon filters and dechlorination advice
hi all
i am just about to replace my carbon filter for the pond. can anyone advise me whether to go for another simple in line carbon tube or would there be any advantages on going for the three cylinder cartridge filters and if so which one. I also need to replace my water testing kit, can anyone suggest which one to go for. Many thanks

I'm no expert but I think the decision for both comes down to cost e.g. how many litres do you need to fill, the cost of cartridges, outright costs etc. EA do an inline option and vyair offer 3 stage units. Not sure what the benefits are but either way you need to monitor the litres used.
The API drop test kit seems to be the most popular on here, I have an NT Labs which seems to do the drop but I believe drop tests are better than strips.

many thanks are there any advantages with the three canister systems or do you think I should just should stay with the EA carbon inline filter I presume the three canister systems simply have a micron filter for aid by 20 carbon filters not sure if I need the Micron filter but definitely the carbon to dechlorinate etc are there any other advantage with the cartridge Systems do you think?

Is this going to be for partial changes or trickle in? How big is your pond? How much are you planning to change per week / day? All of these will help you pick the right unit.
The EA does 4 litres a minute so if you're doing partial changes it might take forever to fill up? I'm not 100% up on which is better to be honest, someone more knowledgeable than me will be along. I don't yet have one so just add a drop of Kusuri Dechlorinator and put the hose on spray a few inches above the pond. That's only around £22 for 1 litre but treats 100,000 litres. I will get something plumbed in permanently when I get our extension and drains put in.

Many thanks I have a 1500 gallon pond heavily stocked and do a top up four times a day for an hour automatically through the decline 80 at tap water pressure I've had this system going for about 12 years now and the koi seem to drive on it but the life of the carbon filter is due for replacement it has a bottom drain ariated 55 watt UV and an oase compact proficlear rotary drum filter and Alex 13 Media moving bed water is crystal clear and crown Motors are always good just seeing if there was a step up to the cartridge type filters would be any improvement do the normal test kits measure chlorine as well I had ones that did but can't recall what manufacturer they were from

Be very wary of the claimed max flow rates of any of the carbon filters. Get yourself some DPD4 tablets, run the filter at the claimed max flow rate and check for chlorine. There is another thread on here at the moment and the person ran their filter at the claimed max and it was letting chlorine through. After a bit of trial and error found that he had to run it at around half the claimed flow rate.
As for test kits NT Labs or API.

Dechlorinator Units - Water Purifiers
Just ordered one of these, tried and tested although did consider making something along the lines that Milaz made but didn’t have time.

I have just bought the EA 30and its claimed 4 gallon max per hour is heavily over estimated, I am running it about half that and it only just copes.
As Frimley says get yourself some DPD4 tablets and test regularly
The flow rate on the dechlorinator will be dependant on where you are on the supply pipe, beginning or end as the levels of chlorine change dependant on location
I use the NT labs drop tester and it is very good, although I will soon be going for the Hanna meters4600 Gallon Concrete Block and Fiberglass

The only thing that would worry me about using one of those filters and putting a high flow rate through them is by the time you realise it is letting chlorine through it you could have a hell of a lot of chlorinated water in your pond. But that's just my opinion as obviously they have been testing flow rates to find out what they can get safely. The write up mentions that to remove the chlorine the water coming in has to be in contact with the carbon granules for 4 minutes. If you are flowing 100 lpm through a canister that only holds about 25 litres then those figures don't add up to me but then again I could be wrong again lol

Correction it was lph not lpm.
Even so the small filter holds 12 litres and has a max flow rate of 180 lph so that is only 3 lpm!!! That's not much better than the EA ones or the 3 cannister systems and costs a hell of a lot more for just a gain of around 0.5 to 1.5 lpm

i have three pod canister and i lost a few fish through them letting chlorine in the pond. i do not trust them. so i now put ST in the pond instead. and if i do any water changes i just put more st in the pond.
and run the hose without the 3 pod canister. i still trickle in through the 3 pod canister. only really for the taking out of metals. and not for chlorine. i just add a teaspoon of st every 3rd day. cheap as chips of flea bay. 7 quid
and lasts me over a year. there is lots on here gone down this route. for the reasons i have mentioned. if you work away like i used to you can just make a solution up in a canister or bucket. and trickle the st in. through say a couple of pin holes. which is what i did for three week rota on the oil rigs. i also think its cheaper then what you pay for three cartridges for the pod.
i payed 300 quid for mine and to me after 6 months i thought it was useless
go to mank sanky site it is all on there about ST
as said above if you do use a pod get the DPD4 tablets. even using ST i still use These.
