Trickle dechlorinator for 5500 gallon pond

I am looking at setting up the trickle filling on my new pond, it is approximately 5500 gallons, so I need something that will handle the flow that I will need, its only for trickle feed, not filling, when fill or do big water changes I will use Sodium Thiosulphate

Any thoughts, what do you lot use, pictures are always good too, we like pictures

If you are not too bothered about what it looks like Roy, you could use a standard ball valve like you find in water tank in your loft if you haven't got a combi boiler that is, or you could use a Torpek? valve which is smaller and will allow the pond to fill the last couple of inches quicker than a standard ball valve will.

I fitted a standard ball valve a few years ago and recently changing it to a Torpek valve but after having a few issues went back to the ball valve again. I altered the Torpek so it was fitted upside down so didn't need the silent fill tube thing and it worked for a little while until the mating season when the koi nearly knocked the float device off the valve lol.

Forgot to say that my top up system was fed for years via a standard garden hose through a 3 stage filter which eventually got too weak and split twice in 24 hours so replaced the hose with John Guest speedfit pipe and fittings. Screwfix do all the bits you need I think. The original ball valve was from Wickes a few years ago.

If you can hide the ball valve all well and good but if not then go for the Torpek valve but might be worth putting a cage or something round to protect it from being knocked or the kio damaging themselves on it.

I have an overflow on the skimmer, so the level is controlled by that, what I need it to make sure that the water going in doesn't contain chlorine, so as for top up I have mains water in the filer room and I was thinking of having a constant trickle and possibly an auto top up if the water level drops too low, but again it needs to be dechlorinated

I use one of these 30 inch one EA Dechlorinator Carbon Filter on a 4200g constant trickle into drum. Have no issues.

Even easier then if you already have a water supply in your filter shed. Get yourself a 3 cannister water filter, a flow meter and a ball valve of some description. Try Vyair for the filter and flow meter. Some filters allow a higher flow rate than others. I think the standard 10" 3 cannister system has a max flow rate of 1.5 lpm with the standard filters but they sell heavy duty ones that can handle 2.5 lpm flow rate. OK for a trickle feed.

Is this a disposable unit or can it be refilled?

Disposable, depending on your trickle output it should last you approximately 3 years if your trickle about 10% pw

    Hi,

I have just installed a Vyair 20inch three cartridge system. Working great and cartridges only £20 for replacement. I was recommended this by others on this forum. Link here:

Most of these dechlorinators are great for trickle feeds but due to their low max flow rates not very good for a fast refill so take your pick.

I started off with one of the EA 12" canisters and the stated max flow rate was considerably higher than what it was capable of filtering safely and like all these filters you need to keep an eye on their output and check for any signs of chlorine getting through them.

I've had 2 lots of the 10" Vyair units plus one spare set of heavy duty refills for them and the only reason I had to get the second unit was because I forgot to drain it and bring it in over the winter. It lasted one or two winters OK then we had a bad one and it broke the outer canisters due to the freezing water.

Well its just for trickle feeding, I need (I think) about 15 litres per hour trickling in to give me a 10% water change per week, the unit i have gone for is capable (apparently) of doing 4 litres per minute, so I should be well within safety margins

Be interested to see how you get on with them both. Did you get a flow meter as well?

I will be getting one in a couple of weeks when the pond is finished, I need one to know exactly how big my pond is when its all done.

I'm just using the dechlorinator to trickle the temporary pond whilst I go on holiday, so i'll set it up for now at 2 litres per minute, using a jug, simple and effective

Trickle dechlorinator is now installed, what a pain it was to do, The reason is that I want it hard plumbed in rather than hose pipe, so I was searching though all my fittings to get it connected and typically I didn't have any stainless steel 3/4 couplings, I only had brass, which I didn't want to use, so I ended up bodging it in just to get it running, I needed to get it going as I'm on holiday next week and I wanted the trickle working before then, so it now goes from the MDPE 1/2" valve to 12mm air tube to 8mm air tube to a Flow Restrictor to 8mm air tube to 12mm air tube to hose pipe and then hose pipe to 12mm air tube to 8mm air tube to the temporary pond

It works that's the main thing and I now know what bits I need to get it done properly

Make sure you invest in some DPD4 tablets to test the output for chlorine. Once upon a time I had an EA dechlorinator and found it could only run at a woefully pathetic trickle without letting some chlorine pass. It was nowhere near the advertised flow rate, even when it was new. 6 months later was even worse
