Dechlorinator Units - Water Purifiers - Absolute Koi
it's what I was advised to get
Medium Cylinder: 40,000 Gallons treatment. For the safe removal of chlorine and other harmful chemicals in fresh tap water. Supplied complete with a 5 micron pre-filter. 20 Litre capacity (300 litres per hour) 39" high x 8" Diameter

yeah great for chlorine or chemicals, but no heavy metals removal....how important is that ?, im not sure tbh, id ask about before deciding.

Think I want more than just activated carbon. I'm quite happy to manually dechlorinate (as I've done this all my life and never had a problem) so would ideally like something that filters out other impurities and heavy metals.
As for the nitrite problem.....
The 15 litres of K1 in the bucket was consuming 30 ml of ammonia per day and there was no real need to keep the bucket going so I put it in the Nexus.
Results were exactly the same as when I've previously added mature media - Nitrites dropped by 50% after 24 hours, then over the next few days they crept back to 2 ppm and have stayed there since.
Isolating the section of pond with the cheap liner has made no difference. In fact the nitrite in that section is now reading very marginally lower than in the main pond but this is probably due to rain dilution. So I still have no idea what the cause is.
Remaining options:
1) Get on with setting up anoxic filtration using biocenosis baskets.
2) Buy a pressure filter and fill it with mature media (not K1) and see if this solves it.
3) Keep waiting.
The nitrite problem has definitely impacted the growth of my Koi, but fortunately they all look reasonably happy and healthy and only tend to show symptoms when nitrites go beyond 2 ppm.

Maybe adding that matured media has done something....
Nitrite has halved overnight from 2 ppm to 1 ppm. Interestingly the isolated section of pond has also come down from just under 2 ppm to just under 1 ppm.
Conclusions so far are:
- The extra mature media I added 6 days ago stalled for a few days (change of temps etc) and is now kicking in.
- Isolating a section of the pond has somehow affected the systems balance.
- The 2 inches of rain a couple of days back has done something.
- This is just a fluke that will last a day or 2 then return back to "normal".
Not checked KH yet, but other parameters have changed overnight too...
- PH has been a solid 8.2 since day 1 and has never moved, but today it is between 8 and 8.1.
- Nitrates which do vary a lot between 20 and 60 ppm tend to be in the 40ppm region, but today they are 80 ppm. ( I have had a single 80ppm reading once before in the middle of the summer).

Pond nitrite 0.5 ppm today. The lowest its been since 7th June.
Being the pessimist the initial thought was the cycle had completely broken down, so I immediately checked ammonia levels, and there is a reading of 0.25 ppm, but the odd spike to this level isn't uncommon so I'll just monitor it for now.Last edited by RS2OOO; 21-10-2018 at 09:48 AM.

what kind of media did you add. In your nexus or complete other filter?

Hi,
As described throughout this thread, K1, except when I added mature alfagrog for a period of time.

Today's Nitrite = 0.25 ppm.
Looks like 6 Months of hell might be finally over!
Fingers crossed.

The Alfagrog was in a basket in the centre of the Nexus, and also 2kg in a number of mesh bags hanging in various places such as above the air stone, in front of the pond inlet pipe, and inside the Nexus hanging over the overflow pipe. Basically positioned in various places where there is air and water movement.
I removed much of the Alfagrog but still have a couple of bags in the pond - The one over the air stone and one in the Nexus.

Definitely some changes occurring in the pond.
Today's parameters:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0.25
Nitrates: 40
PH 8.1 (Joint lowest reading to date)
KH 9 (Lowest reading to date)
GH 12 (Lowest reading to date)
Phosphates: 0.5
All in all I don't think that's a bad set of numbers, just a little bit more to go on the nitrites.

75 litres of K1 in the Nexus at the moment - and only 8 medium sized Koi.
I think its the bucket matured K1 that's working more than the Alfagrog. In particular I'd purely guess its the 5 litres of K1 that I cycled static (inside an Eheim) that is working best because this was brown when I pulled it out of the Eheim and not only is it still brown, but I think its gone even darker.
I've learned a lot over the last few Months and if there's anything I would say it is that EA's advice to reduce K1 (because there was too much for the waste load) is the one thing that stands out as not being the best advice. Could be coincidence but this is the most K1 I've ever had in the Nexus and suddenly parameters are improving.
There are many other factors that could have influenced it though, and I will never know for sure the root cause of not being able to cycle the Nexus for so many Months.
My personal conclusions would be:
1) PP the K1 and cycle it in a bucket that has constant moving oxygenated water (not necessarily moving bed) for as long as possible before buying fish and adding the K1 to the Nexus. At one point I had 15 litres of K1 consuming 30ml of Ammonia per day.
2) Buy products that you are sure have no level of toxicity in them. (Cheap liners or anti-fungal sealants etc).
3) In my experience cycling is much much faster when using media in a static environment with water flowing through it, as opposed to trying to cycle from scratch in a moving bed environment.
4) Don't over clean the Nexus in the first few Months of operation, let it run as long as possible before cleaning. This might not be the correct advice, but recently I've only been cleaning it once a fortnight and suddenly parameters have improved.
5) Don't carry out too many water changes in the first few Months of operation. As above, I've only been changing 10% water every 2 Weeks recently which may (or may not) have sped up cycling of the moving bed.
6) If your Koi are very healthy and the water well oxygentated they can thrive in Nitrite levels of 1 ppm for many Months without issue and 2 ppm for many Months with the addition of salt. Over 1 ppm without salt or 2 ppm with salt and problems arise fast.
The above may not work for everyone in every situation. I have very hard water, a high KH, a very stable PH of 8.2 (now down to 8.1) and we have had one of the hottest summers on record. You just don't know if any of these factors have contributed to any part of the process.Last edited by RS2OOO; 23-10-2018 at 04:07 PM.

Finally, 7 Months after installing the Nexus the nitrite problem appears to be resolved.
Today's Parameters are:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 40
PH 8.2
KH 8 (Lowest reading to date)
GH 11 (Lowest reading to date)
Phosphates: 0.5
My Conclusions from last Month in the post above still stand as to what I believe contributed to resolving the issue but despite no scientific evidence, I will say that I believe the breakthrough came when I added K1 that had matured inside a static filter. This K1 still stands out in the Nexus as being much darker than the rest and is filled with furry brown type growth inside the protected areas, whereas other K1 still looks relatively white in comparison.

Bit of a thread revival,
After experiencing similar problems in trying to get my Nexus to deal with nitrites, I came across this thread, and found some of the information invaluable to help pointing me in the right direction to find some remedies.
I thought I would give it a bump up, for anyone else who may be having trouble with nitrites.
Big thanks to rs2000 for seeing this thread out to a conclusion.
