Retro fit a UVC to a standard easy pod
Was wondering if it is possible to retro fit a UVC into a standard easy pod? Looks like if I can find the right UVC it's a case of drilling out the top of the easy pod above the inlet and fitting it in place but in practise probably not that simple?
I've got a separate UVC but thought if I could fit one into the easy pod it would do away with extra restrictions in the pipe work, free up some space in my shed and tidy things up in the process.
I've seen some UVCs that are sold as submersible and wondered if they could be used?

Looks like this could be a non starter as on the Evolution Aqua website they sell the complete UVC units as a replacement item but don't recommend it as a retro fit.
The only other thing I can find is something made by Amalgam and I think that's too long to fit in the easy pod where the UVC would go.

Thanks Andi,
Just wondering if the biggest one they do is 11 watts would be big enough?
Does that read right to you !!

Sorry I must have missed those ones Andi, well it was early, for me anyway
Just thinking if there is enough room would be possible to fit one or two of the smaller ones to the underside of the lid of the easy pod? Would that work or do they need to be in the water to work. Maybe the key word is submersible?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aquarium-...-/302450874493 theres these but ship from china, depends how quick you want it,it needs to be in the water, plus if you fit under lid it will kill any good bacteria in your k1,andi

Thanks Andi. under the water makes sense, or they wouldn't be called submersible would they. So I'm guessing it would have to go where the UVC would be in an easy pod complete - which is above the water inlet.

you could just push it under the inlet part so your not drilling,or drill a hole to drop it in and put a rubber grommet over hole to hold it and power cable in place, andi

That's a possibility.
Looking at the spec of those aquarium ones I noticed that they are saying don't run them for more than 2 hours per day so I'm not sure they will work 24 hours a day as there could be an over heating issue with them or the transformers / drivers.
Surely the internals of an easy pod complete can't be different from a standard easy pod can they? so apart from it not being able to screw the UVC assembly they sell as a replacement into the top of the easy pod I can't see why it can't be retro fitted

think the couple of hours a day is due to being in aquarium, probaby recirculate water 10 times in a couple of hours, which would be enough,as it will be submersed i cant see it overheating,if they sell a retrofit version then why cant you just fit your own how you want, theres just takes the stress from looking and figuring it out how to do it,andi

Thanks Andi,
They sell a kit but say it can't be retro fitted as it's sold as a replacement
When I look at photos of an easy pod complete next to the top of the UVC there are 2 small stainless steel dome things that I'm assuming are fixings for the UVC assembly so it doesn't just sit in the top of the easy pod and wobble about as the water moves round the insides of the filter. There may be more to it than that but as I've not seen inside an easy pod complete I can't compare it to the internals of my easy pod.

looking at the replacement kit i cant see why it cant be retrofitted,im guessing that under the top of new one there will be a steel plate with a thread on it for reinforcement round the hole and to screw the uv onto,so the onlyy thing you wouldnt have is a fastener for the uv to screw onto, which could be got around im sure, andi

Thanks, you've confirmed what I was thinking. The kit doesn't look too badly priced either - thought it was £36 or something like that. I'm sure I could find some way of attaching a thread or a fixing of some description when I see the UVC assembly
Just don't tell anyone I'm retro fitting it or I'll have someone on my case - I'll just say my original broke some how to throw them off the scent OK

Did you ever do this modification? Just bought an eazy pod for my quarantine/grow on and looking to do the same

I looked into getting photos of the internals of Eazy Pod completes to see how the UVC fitted into the top of the filter but of the two people I contacted on here only one of them replied but wouldn't give me any photos just links to pictures online which were no use at all so I gave it up as a bad job. It's a typical EA thing as in they use threads that only they can supply and noting else can be used to retro fit it unfortunately. The UVC kit they supply is just a standard looking UVC and you remove the quartz sleeve and lamp etc and fit it into the existing opening on the top of the Eazy Pod complete. So unless you can find someone selling a damaged Eazy Pod complete or can find something with the same thread made out of metal mounted on a flat enough plate you are stuffed. The only other thing you could try which I have just thought of is make yourself a flat plate out of a bit of pressure pipe cut the correct size hole into it, then cut the body of the UVC down so you have the thread and as much of the flat section as possible, then screw the threaded bit of the UVC either so it fits straight onto the flat plate made from the pressure pipe or have the screw threaded bit on top of the Eazy Pod and then screw the new flat plate under it so it sandwiches the top of the Eazy Pod between the 2 plates. Ideally I would still like to see the internals of an Eazy Pod complete to see how much if any of a sleeve there is for the quartz sleeve to fit through on the top of the Eazy Pod?

This is kind of what I was thinking -
Attachment 28737
The right hand option would require a bigger hole cut in the top of the Eazy Pod to allow the UVC lamp assembly to screw into it but I am not sure if there would be enough of a plate on the threaded section to allow this to happen?

Thanks for the info, I have access to facilities to be able to make a custom thread but your way might be easier. I pick up the filter tonight so will be able to have a better look n decide which way to go. You mentioned above that you found the replacement kits for £36, do you have a link as I can only find them for £68.
One more point, you mention drilling the top and inserting it this way however the easy pod complete looks to me like it comes in at the bottom, is there a reason you have chosen to modify the top?
