    Question British drum

Hi all. Im thinking of purchasing a bd500 but theres little info on them especially once installed. If you have one or have an opinion on them please post. Id like to be as infomed as possible before i shell out a load of cash

It will be used to replace my dear old multibay (along with a bio chamber) on my 4000 gallon pond.

Look forward to hearing peoples thoughts.

They are a good piece of kit and do what it says on the tin.
And being an British company ,spares are readily available
If your thinking of getting a new one go direct to the company that makes them.
Mark is a really knowledgeable guy and a new drum is in the pipeline.
I cant say too much as i dont know how far Mark has got with making the filter and patenting it.
He work for Burtons Aquatics which are based in Marden Kent

Hi Andy. I think ive read some of your previous posts about the drum. Im going to look at some at the factory on Friday. Luckily its only half an hour away so should be an interesting trip.

Apart from the motor has yours been ok? Was there an issue with the set up height on yours initially? All ok now i hope.

Why did you have to mention a new drum in the pipeline☺ makes me want to wait. Perhaps i'll enquire on friday lol

They had some “new” ones at the recent show. The design featured an additional spray bar that shoots the poop down the waste tray which alleviates the issue of having ti give it a manual clean every so often I believe.
They looked alright to be fair, no better or worse than anything else and considerably cheaper than others of similar flow rates.
Clever bloke that Mark and seems like a nice chap too. If I remember correctly, they’re on about the 4th “revision” of the standard drum having ironed out a few of the initial teething problems but I’d still like to hear from a few more owners before parting with the cash for one. Information is very thin on the ground considering they’ve been available for quite some time. Having said that, people tend to moan on forums when things go wrong but don’t come of and sing the praises of a product when it’s working fine so maybe that’s a good sign?

Your right there is precious little info on them considering they have sold a few over the years. Its good to know they have improved on the design too.

Does crud tent to get stuck in the waste shoot on yours? If thats all the cleaning needed it will be a breeze compared to my multibay.

Blanketweed tends to get stuck in the chute.
Also some type of rake on the inside of the drum to grab larger bits of debris up to the chute would be good.

i looked at these drums but i couldn't find any positive reviews really, only thing i found on YouTube was complaints about the noise they make, because the wash pump is mounted on a metal plate on the side of the drum and it vibrates really badly.
I just went with queni in the end, loads of good reviews for them.

Been looking at the q35 also but is Ł500 more expensive. Your right in that ive not read a bad thing about them though. Its such a big outlay along with bio chamber etc.

are you pricing on quenis bio chamber or one made by JBR plastics? Quenis 450 bio chamber is double the money, that you can get a really good, big one for, from JBR.

queni will usually knock the "points you earn" money off your purchase if you ask nicely, which equates to 125 quid saving on a qk 35.

They did a 15% off sale a while back, ask them for a 15% discount, they can only say no.
For a 35k Drum I’d also look at the Aqua Source. Have a chat with Dean, he’s a helpful chap.
Another vote for JBR chamber as far as cost goes or one from Ian at Evolve (JBR make those too) or knock one up yourself if you’re a handy DIYer.

Hi all; i've been running a BD 500 for three years ...started off bad with leaks and dodgy drive motor but as you say Marks a decent guy and this was replaced and they upgraded the backwash pump. i have now replaced drive motor 4 times and the backwash is now giving up the ghost ,also drum bearing very slack. Friend of mine bought a Profidrum the same time and has no problems.Moral of this story save your money and buy the best....it pays in the long term.

Hi yes all fitted and working well. Havent cleaned alfragrog for 2 weeks now. I was doing that every couple of days before. Water clarity is amazing. Kust got to work out how to stop it all freezing in winter as all filters are outside.
