skimmer into bd line
I am about to order a 4in aerated bd and skimmer and was wondering, is it possible and would it work to plumb the skimmer into bd line which then be a single 4in outlet plumbed into a sieve? hope this makes sense.
Cheers

yes, but you will ned a ball valve on each line to balance. I have this setup into a vortex, and run the BD fully open and just tweak the skimmer open enough to 'Skim'.
you won't get much flow on the skimmer, but it does work.

I presume both are 4"? Provided both are separate feeds with separate valves this works fine. At one point I had a BD & skimmer feeding into a Cetus sieve - It worked fine except that I couldn't get enough flow through the sieve (large pond!). It helps if you have a similar run length and number of bends but if you don't you can clamp down slightly on the faster flowing line to get a balance.
6000g in ground koi pond
+3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

Hi yes they will be both 4" the pond isnt going to be that big I'm looking at around 10' x 8' same amount of bends the skimmer run will be a bit shorter than BD, but awesome if it has been done and works that sounds good to me I new to ponds and trying not to make too many mistakes too early in the build, thanks for your replies

Do a small sketch and take a picture and I’m sure some one will help

My pond is over filtered, so I have no issues running both into the same filter.
My advice would be to do a lot of your bends with rubber bends, easy and quick to do, but allows you to change your mind when (if) you decide you want to run a separate skimmer filter.

Thanks guys just one more question sorry if I sound thick but if I saved some more pennies for a twin 110mm inlet sieve would this be a better option and give better flow from skimmer and BD?

no.
You'll have exactly the same problem, and still need the valves.
okay, it would give better flow, but it's unlikely that a 4" pipe will be a bottleneck in your system on a pond that size. That said, bigger is always better when it comes to filtration.

I presume you will be getting your sieve second hand - if a nice Ultra sieve turns up on eBay locally then go for it. Otherwise as has been mentioned a single won't make much difference. If you go for a Cetus then it's the internal 3inch and bellows that restrict flow.

In originally built my skimmer onto my bottom drain line but it didnt work. My skimmer wouldnt pull at all. I have since split them and put my skimmer into easypod and it works a lot better
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
