As I want my heat pump to work if we go sub zero (my backup heater is only 2kw and under powered) I am fitting a drip tray heater. As I don't really want to spend nearly 140 on a pucker one - I am putting together my own using a drain line heater cable and a thermostat should work just as well I think, and only cost 26.50.
6000g in ground koi pond
+3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

Pip, just one suggestion - check the owners manual to your ASHP as most of them have connectors for it on their control unit under the cover pre-installed even if not supplied with one - so you may just need to connect heating cable to it w/o need to build your own thermostat / control unit. The original heat cable is just that - the same as used for gutter heating - might have specific connector on one end only. Important - check that you will use correct power output one not to overload your ASHP control unit - voltage, resistance or power output.
You get what you pay for - or better - what you make yourself.

Yeap! that what I did. Capillary Stat, set to switch on at 3deg. Flexible heat cable 80w. Few double spade connectors and a meter or so of foil tape and a P clip to fasten the stat bulb in place. Works a treat. Just remember to insulate the unused (Normally open (NO) terminal on the Stat to avoid any possibility of it shorting out with any part of the heat pump.

Haha, yes you are right.
I actually bought the pipe insulation but couldn't be arsed to fit it (it was a bit cold outside ). I still haven't fitted it now! Mind you this winter I actually haven't yet even got round to putting the pond covers on. Im doing a slightly colder 'winter' at the moment so they are at 8C and the heat pump has hardly been on this month as it's been so mild. My koi officially now hate me as they are not getting any food for 8 weeks2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
