    Drum uv

Hi all, would fitting a uv unit inside drum filter result in drum doing less cleaning cycles. Also best way of cleaning or removing crap from dirty side of drum ??????

Yes as the UV will help to reduce the build up of biofilm on the screen. I vacuum the dirty side of my drum very occasionally to remove any muck.

    What drum have you got?
The dirty side of the drum should be pretty much cleaning itself really. The odd hose of the waste chute, and dumping the contents when purging the bottom drain(s) should be most of the maintenance you need to do.

I have an 80w Amalgam UV in the clean side of my drum which has kept the screen clean as a whistle for well over a year.

It is important to note which drum you have, as the darker materials used in say the oase proifdrum are not uv safe. The plastic will degrade and fail. Check with the manufacturer if it is ok to do so..

    Hi Feline,
I've been meaning to ask you, would it be possible to see a photo of your drum please?
I'm keen to know how you have installed the UV, and also what type of airstone your using to keep the muck moving?

I'm noticing that I get a bit of muck in the RH corner of the dirty side of the drum, which an airstone would sort I guess, but it seems very close to the moving drum, so I didn't leave it in just incase it snagged something.

Is the UV not compatible with the Profi Premium plastic????? Interesting point.....

    Thank you
Its a hole in the ground where I throw my money!

    I have a ProfiDrum.
Used to have an amalgam on the dirty side. At that time I had to clean the mesh with acid at least once per year. It also caused the drum seal to fail.
Profi now recommend having uv in the clean side. Since moving mine the seal is fine and have never had to clean the mesh.

Many thanks for all the replies, have noticed doing far to many cleaning cycles and water weiring through screen at clean side water level. At present turned system off will get out there today and jet screen off. Its the stainless INAZUMA 50 drum with 50 micron screen maybe this is to fine. Hoping now Santa is gonna leave a UV under tree. Shame no one explains when purchasing drum that `You will also require one of these to keep screen clean` or maybe they did and i wasn`t listening. Found Kitsu have one on offer at £215, many thanks again Guys and Girls Dean

Interesting thread this, as I have had an Aquadrum since 2013, and have never had the need to clean the screen with acid or jet wash? And Where I am situated ,(Suffolk), is one of the hardest water areas in the country.

I have no UV inside the drum, but clean only with a hose once a week.

I know that the screen is not blocked as when I have drained the drum to purge/clean etc, when I run the water back in from the pond both the dirty side and clean side water levels come up exactly together, ie there is no delay on the clean side, and that is running it in quickly via 4" pipes.?

So whether it is regular cleaning with only hose pressure I really have no idea, but I had concerns when purchasing the drum regarding screen blocking due to where I live, but it has never occurred, strange!

    Drum uv

I’m with John; Profidrum with Amalgam on the clean side, no issues so far.

I’d say the chlorine in the tap water you’re cleaning with is probably stopping the bio film from forming.

That's a good call, never even thought that may be the reason, but if it is then it must be the way to go, if it avoids cleaning the bio from the drum.

My other concern was limescale but I am not getting this either.

I have also wondered about different spray pump pressures on different drums, and wondered if this makes any difference ie knocking the bio off with added pressure?
I know for a fact that the Aqua 55 and the 35 have exactly the same submersible spray pump, but the 55 has one more spray nozzle, making the 35 pressure a bit higher due to less outlets.

Not sure about other makes but Profi use agricultural spray nozzles so you can buy ones with different spray patterns and pressures.

Interesting point about limescale. I use a water softener but I didn’t get limescale in my drum before I started with the softener and I have quite hard water too.
    Strange!
    Can’t explain that one.

Here is how I installed my UV (the small amount of mulm in the bottom of the clean side compartment is what has accumulated there over the past 6 months since I last dumped it, so not very much at all really.

Hi all jetted off drum screen sunday to now find clean side water level much higher and just below dirty side water level, which also means higher level running through multi-bay behind drum. So less cleaning cycles, less topping up. So finally after adding 2nd 4'' feed from new skimmer in pond revamp, now seeing benefits of adding drum to system. At present running the best since install early summer. Many thanks to all for help and advise replies in sorting many problems along the way, happy Koi keeper Dean
