    Gravity feed Bakki shower

Now I have your attention, hear me out :-)
in this moment of time I’m building my new filter shed, to house my nexus 320 and maybe another nexus next year or a grow on/qt tank.
had a measure up and my nexus is 1.2 metres higher then my pond as in my garden has different levels with the nexus being on the next level up from the pond, instead of having a horrible 4 inch pipe returning my water back to the pond, I was thinking of using a 3 inch return and then having a homemade Bakki shower with some ceramic media in just to have extra media as we all know the nexus is a nitrate power house so what do you guys think?
    Worth a punt?
Wouldnt cost me the earth and I’m pretty good at diy so that’s not a issue
I know with the bhm and the big stainless showers are ment to have a massive amount of water running over it but this will be a little homemade Bakki with maybe alphagrog and a box of queni koi media and some siporax, sky’s the limit

would like to hear your thoughts or any problems you guys can think of
this is only a idea I had while cleaning my nexus tonight and removing two tree stumps ready to shutter my shed base lol

    cheers sniper

You would need to be very careful with how water is delivered into the top of your shower. A standard spray bar arrangement would create some back pressure and overflow your Nexus. You would need to make sure the water could freely leave the end of the pipe into the top of the shower. You will have to work out how to make that flow spread out evenly rather than just go into one place.

(Your shower will not be a Bakki - that is a trade name. Yours will be just a shower Its like saying you are building a DIY Nexus- sure you could build something with K1 that worked something like a Nexus, but it could not be accurately described as a Nexus )

    Cheers for the reply feline,
that was exactly my first thought was not to overflow the nexus so need to think of the output side of things
i need to put some ideas on paper :-)
i just put Bakki shower to spark interest and get some other ideas but yeah it will only be a shower at the end of the day :-)

To get water to come out of a spray bar that has an open end in an even pattern, you should progressively increase the size of the holes towards the open end. The hole furthest from the source of water is larger than the hole nearest. Not by a lot, maybe start with 5mm and end with 8mm, something like that; trial and error will be needed for your context.
Also at the open end of the bar, apply a 90 degree bend facing downwards so that and stray water is directed to the media and doesn't run in a film down the inside.
I did this for the spray bar in my filter.

Now, I'm off to do the Hoover-style vacuuming.

i have a small 3 tier shower full of crystal bio after my nexus and only putting 8000lph back over it pumped through 1 1/2" pipe,if you used 3" pipe or even 2" and cut slots in instead of holes then i dont think you would have any issues, instead of a multi tier shower have you thought of something like a single long trough, andi

But your Nexus is gravity fed isnt it Andi?
Silentsnipers is pump fed so needs the bigger pipe on the outlet.

Easily done. Have your 3 or 4" gravity feed enter the shower dead centre with a T. Extend the T so that the pipe covers the whole length of the shower with a cap at both ends. Cut a large 1" slot the entire length of the pipe at the very top of the pipe. As long as the pipe is level then the water has to fill the pipe and will over flow into the shower equally along its whole length ensuring great water distribution. Simples

if he cuts a hole in the top then wont the water just flow out the top and run round and under the pipe so he will just get a long line of water, not a spray as such, wont this only hit the media along the centre this way, andi

As soon as it hits the first bit of media it will start to move all over the media. Is a compromise if you want to gravity feed a shower. By the time it exits the first tray it will be dispersed.
