xmas sturgeon scare
Had a bit of a scare over Xmas
one of my baby sturgeon 8"fish decided it would start a new trick of swimming into my wide mouth skimmer only to get stuck he has always been a surface swimmer likes to be hand fed and tickled but had always kept out or the skimmer.
he did this twice both times I went into a massive panic expecting my Sturgeon to die but after taking some advise I left him in the pond let him get his bearings back and de stress and off he went swimming and eating again.
Skimmer is now turned off and im waiting for a skimmer guard to arrive hopefully this will solve the problem
so watch your sturgeon in your skimmers people

yep they get fed 4 times a day with orchard fisheries sturgeon food, twice in morning twice at night and I know they like to browse around so the food is scattered down one hole side of the pond this stops the koi from grabbing too much too as well
he is always doing laps of the edge of the pond just below the surface my other one is always on the bottom totally different characters, ive checked oxygen that's fine he never gasps at the surface he just likes to swim there, he disappears for a little while then bang he's up there doing circuits again
I purchased two Sturgeon from the same batch, both were the same size about 6" one is now 12-14" the other one who likes the skimmer is still only 8" I started hand feeding him because I felt that maybe the koi ( there are some big boys in there ) were bashing him out the way when it comes to pellets. the larger sturgeon is all over it eats straight away and you see him dart from one side of the pond to the other as soon as the pellets hit the water, but the 8" takes some persuading for him to eat the pellets I have to drop them in front of him as he is swimming he will then go down and eat with no problem. he takes some caring for but I think that's one of the reasons I would have been so gutted to have lost him

I think everyone has that one fish that takes a bit more care than the others, but would we have it any other way, give me an excuse to spend more time out there

My sturgeon also does laps of the pond. One minute it will be circling the bottom the next it will be at the top.
Pushing 10 years old it is now over 3feet long so be patient and the effort will be worth it. They are magnificent and everyone comments "have you still got the shark?"
