You asked how to check how you’d know if resin needed changing.
I’m saying check the GH on the output of the softener to check.

nothing to do with r.o but I was water testing the other day and decided to raise my p.h and k.h to give more safety margin against p.h crash.
P.h was 7-7.2, kh was 1 dh,
then after id added a few cups of bicarb over a few hour period p.h was 7.5, k.h over 2 dh but under 3 dh and g.h was 6 dh.
Now I dont profess to know much about all this hard and soft malarky, all I need to know is, am I in the ball park water wise for growing whales , the test kit said g.h should be higher, what do you think?

Personally I would of left it at PH 7-7.2
I believe the closer you can get to PH 7.0 the better with a GH of 6dh would be considered as hard water so the closer you get to 0 dh the better.
I run my pond with a KH of 0.5-1dh, GH 0.5-1dh, PH 6.9-7.0 TDS is around 60-80ppm depending on feeding.

yeah thanks, i just feeling like i was sailing a bit close to the wind with a very low k.h giving me no room for p.h buffering.
I dont understand why the Colombo kit says a g.h of 8 to 14 is ideal for a pond then tbh, I thought I was already low at g.h 6 dh, so to try to get It to zero sounds odd.

I wouldn’t worry too much with a KH of 1dh providing its monitored regularly.
I don’t think the instructions on the Colombo test kit apply when running soft water. it’s a bit like the instructions on the Kusui PP treatment “Re-dose as required to achieve a minimum total of 15 hours of purple coloured water”

Hi all.
Interesting reading. I tested my GH on Saturday with a colombo test kit and my tap water was 16dh
How do I reduce mine down or should I leave be?

Thanks for the reply. I was not necessarily saying that i would like to run it lower as I don't really understand the benefits of running GH high or low, I was just reading this thread and realised how high my tap water is reading.
I do have an RO unit that I used on my marine set ups but not really sure if I want to go that route if it is not 100% necessary due to the wastage of the reject water, I have read a few threads where people are using RO and have seen improvements in their fish but my thinking is that ponds have been run for eternity and not needed RO that's not to say that it is not a better way to run a pond just not entirely sure I want to go that route.
Thanks again Craig.

You certainly don't need to worry about GH unless you are trying to replicate Japanese conditions in a quest to replicate their success at growing koi. Most people don't worry about GH at all. It won't affect the health of your fish really (although a sudden rise in GH can cause hardness shock).
I'm running RO but the main reason is not about the GH. Having a very low GH is a nice side effect though if you believe soft water helps growth, colour, skin, lustre and reduces shimmies forming.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I think my my original question was because my drum had stopped filling and someone mentioned that it could be a build up of calcium on the mesh, I did take the mesh out last weekend and soaked it in citric acid for a few hours and it seems to be running better so it may or may not have been a build up. Thanks,

Ah yes, that is a benefit of soft water I had forgotten about.
I was talking to Adam Byer when I was at his place recently about drum screens and he had bought 2 whole sets so he can change them in and out when they need cleaning. I've had mine running 2 years and the screens have neither a biofilm (due to the UV in there) or any calcium deposits (due to the RO water). Unfortunately for Adam he can't add submersible UVs to his because his drums are not made of a UV stable plastic.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Strangely, I have had no calcium build up on drum screen in 2 years. I have plumbed in a soft water supply so may take that route. Not sure about RO being on a meter just because it would double my water bill assuming 50% goes to waste.

I've reduced my waste percentage going over to pond recycling RO. I am still deciding what to do with the top up water though because I only have one 4040 membrane at the moment so am topping up with mains water. The pH and KH still stay low because the recycling RO takes it out of the water again, but the pH is now running higher. I might get a second membrane to run an RO top up from (maybe the smaller 4021 eco membrane as I won't need such a high flow from it).
My next little project is going to be to divert the waste water from the membranes into some of my water butts and get a pump for them so I can water the garden with it via a hose. Obviously this won't help much in the winter when I can divert it to waste again, but in a summer like this would have definitely made a lot of sense. I'm also looking at putting rain water through an RO membrane (which should yield a high percentage of pure) in the winter. I wouldn't get enough rain to do all water changing from, however used in addition to the recycling it could be an almost environment-neutral system at least for part of the year.
Of course any time you don't use mains for the RO you need a booster pump so it uses electricity. I probably need to get some solar panels too2016 new 6000 gallon pond

John,
Bizarrely i also live in Khon Kaen, Thailand and been keeping Koi here for 10 years or so and made lots of mistakes but getting better now I have sent you a PM, maybe a beer and talk Koi?
Regarding Water Softeners i suspect you are looking in the wrong places like Global House, Home Pro etc, it is all junk. There is a place just at the Macro entrance called Grong Narm, big blue sign and you will see lots of plastic/stainless cylinders. I have used them a few times during my Saltwater tank days, Though language may be an issue.
Alternatively have a look at this (Belgian?) guy in Buriram, not too far away from us, speaks English and could tailor a system for you. He does Softeners, Carbon Filters and RO. This includes systems for Thai well water.
Home
I am in the process of deciding whether i need a water Softener or not. My Khon Kaen "City" water has TDS 240ppm, with KH around 70. So GH runs somewhere around 160ppm or less, though i dont currently measure it. PH runs around 7.4-7.6. I do 10% water changes twice weekly, most weeks with an additional trickle water change, water is cheap here this keeps TDS to within 20ppm above base.
Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
