    Good idea or not?

As we know our mains water supply is +/-10c also the understanding is that RO membranes perform better when supply water is warmer!
So my thinking is by increasing the length of tubing from my mains supply to RO membranes from 0.5metre to 3metre+ and submerging the tubing into my pond water would increase the product water from my RO membranes as my pond is heated at 14c during the winter and 24c in summer.
Does anyone running RO do the same? Would a 3metre length of tubing submerged in say 20c be enough to raise the temperature before it reaches the membranes?

    Manky Sanke?

I think it's a good idea but could you make it even longer? Like a shape of a unununun but compressed.

I like the idea a lot, will be watching this one with interest, may try to do something similar but I'm thinking big pressurised container (or copper coil) in the filter house.

Hmm, the numbers don't stack up I'm sad to say.
Assuming 2 litres per minute (that's the input to my membrane) and a 15mm diameter pipe if you had 11 metres of pipe the water would only be in it for one minute, it's not going to warm up much in a minute I wouldn't have thought. Maybe if you could keep it in there for ten minutes? But a 110 metre coil? And how much would that cool your pond down? And half that heat (that you've paid for) would be going straight to waste.

Hmm now you put it like that it doesn’t seem that attractive.
However with the warmer water I would have thought the waste water would be much less maybe 1 3rd? The product water gets heated once in the pond anyway.
Maybe the other benefit would be a longer life span of the membranes?
I’m now thinking of running the 15mm tube “not sure on length as yet” all around my fish house as it’s fully enclosed with 25mm Polly carb and this time of year it’s not uncommon to reach temperatures of 30c. Just a question of hiding X amount of tubing somewhere.

I think the only noticeable heat increase will be generated by you while fitting this ....

You could have a read up on ground source heat generation a few diy'ers have managed to fit their own .... that might provide some figures for study .... but sounds like a lot more effort than it's worth IMO ... 10/10 for the idea though ....

Buy a booster pump. rejection rates improve with pressure and so does product. If you have a softener, use that as scaling is a major issue with RO membranes, as is destruction due to free chlorine (hence the carbon in front). Also, don't buy cheap unbranded membranes as thats a false economy.

Already run a booster pump…was just thinking of improving things further….
