Thread: Colombo Alporex

    Colombo Alporex

    Hi everyone,

So having a friend with a pretty bad case of resistant Costia and then subsequently whitespot we have tried this product.

Not too many know about it, so I thought I'd post a short review.

Four fish in qt with Costia and Whitespot.

Treated as per instructions. Day one, and again on day two.

Scrapes taken a week later, to find no costia, but whitespot still in numbers.

Second dose, Day's one and Two

With a scrape taken today, on all four fish. No Costia, and no Whitespot.

The fish in the main pond have had a couple of really harsh hit's of PP where as it cleared mine up, this wasn't budging, so we've now dosed their main pond with it, and I'll be re-scraping in a weeks time to make sure, if it takes another dose, then so be it.

But for getting rid of whitespot, worked really well. Numbers vastly reduced on one hit, and the second dose finished it off

Kind of expensive if you have a large pond. But worth it if it does the trick. Some parasites are getting pretty resistant.

Just of course my experience with it, and everyone's pond and situations are different.

    Thanks Viv,

Actually had a very quick reply back from colombo, in response to having to buy 4 1ltr bottles to treat my friends pond at £38.50 a pop....

So I sent them an email asking if they were thinking of allowing bigger bottles to be sold over here.

This is there reply, which I found interesting and sad at the same time.

    Dear Mrs. Chapman,

I understand and acknowledge your complaint about the package size of Alparex in the UK. Unfortunately British laws forbid the free sales of medicines for ponds larger than 25.000 ltr (app. 6.000 gallon), see Note 12 at Exemptions for Small Pet Animals | VMD . Hence, the largest package size we sell in the UK is for 20.000 ltr. On the mainland we sell a package size (2.500 ml) for 50.000 ltr, but this is thus forbidden in the UK. Of course there is no law against buying more than one package and basically this comes down to the same effect as buying a bigger bottle. Unfortunately the down side is that two 1000 ml bottles are more expensive than one 2.500 ml bottle, but there is nothing we can do about this legislation. I hope you understand.

    Met vriendelijke groet, Best regards,

Nice to bet such a quick reply.

Sad that for some of us we can't get the right bottle sizes to treat, without costing us an arm and a leg.

Yes Dawn. That does seem very unfair. The trouble with rules and regulations!!! Works out VERY expensive if the pond is quite big. x

Hey Guys, it's come to my attention that someone was mentioning my name on another Forum and talking about this medication and how I used it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear on the first post, but this wasn't in my pond. This was in a friends 14000 gallon pond and QT system.

My fish have been resistant to PP with Costia in the past, and my friends also, but he had Costia and WhiteSpot in his pond and QT facility.

Personally I was able to get rid of Costia in my main pond in the end with a controlled dose of PP and being very careful because I had to up from the norm. (You're not supposed to use PP with sturgeon either, or Machalite and Formalin.) At this time the sturgeon was removed and left in a heavy salt bath, which it didn't like BTW.

I have not used Colombo Alporex in my own main pond with sturgeon. Only my QT tank with Koi, which at the time had costia from some rescue fish a few years ago.

The Alporex was used with great success on both Costia and Whitespot. (because of our area we test for KH regularly as this needs a higher KH to be safe. I do know of fatalities down south because of soft water.

Anyone who wishes to use products in their own systems outside of the recommended retail instructions is ultimately their choice and risk. They do know their own fish better than anyone on the internet.

When I first started out, I didn't know we couldn't use PP, Machalite or Formalin or basically anything with Sturgeon and Orf. Yet, I dosed my pond many a time with these treatments, as I hadn't learned the risks and neither did I have the QT at the time. . I now know better, and yes, I put my sturgeon which I adore at risk. All fish survived. Numerous times, one day they might not.

Please, if anyone talks about me or my circumstances, ask first or point them to this site to ask me specifically.

    Thank you.
