cetus sieve before nexus, why two pumps

hi, was thinking about putting a cetus sieve before my nexus, but been reading that two pumps are required , (why) is this true, because i was thinking if i put sieve gravity fed, then on the outlet of sieve a 4 inch pipe work to inlet of nexus , then the water would constantly be the same height as my pond, and then pump on my nexus outlet , pumping through uv and back to pond, does anyone out there no why this would not work ,

I remember reading about this, the balance pipe and second pump are a safety feature. Trying to pull water through both filters as they slowly build up with waste, can quickly lead to starving the pump. This can happen to a nexus or sieve on their own, if not cleaned regularly, and so even more likely with both together. With the balance pipe and pump, either can block and the system will function, albeit with limited capacity.
In reality, I don't know anyone who successfully uses this method, but I have seen where the nexus is raised up six inches above the pond level, and pump fed fom the sieve to a gravity return. A much simpler solution, and only one pump required.

Hi, again , raising nexus would not be suitable for me, I still don't understand why it would not work, as I have seen some having a vortex before nexus , with one pump, it would be interesting to hear from anyone who has tried it with nexus.

If the sieve and the nexus were at the same height the sieve screen would be submerged and there would be no point having the sieve. The screen on the sieve is meant to have water falling through it, it should not be underwater.

oh I understand now, thanks a lot.

    here's how I done mine,

both the nexus 300 and cetus sieve are at the same level, with a balanced pipe in between
only time my screen blocks is after approx. 3-4 weeks, I wash the waste away everyday, but am in a hard water area, so the 200 micon screen does get clogged with shat and lime scale, but a quick jet wash to the back or underside of the screen, soon clears any muck away

    hope this helps:

Looks good and I'm sure it does a good job , but I don't want two pumps on the go as I also have a shower filter from my skimmer, so already have two pumps and don't want a third, but thanks for clearing things up.

What's the reason you have a sieve before a nexus anyway!. The nexus has it's own mechanical chamber. I could understand it it was before a bead or shower but before a nexus kinda makes the nexus inner circle redundant.

That's exactly the question I was looking for an answer to.

To my way of thinking, the Nexus 220 Eazy, performs coarse mechanical filtration and the seive performs 200 micron fine filtration, which is what I'm looking for, and should, therefore go after the Nexus.

I'd really appreciate some guidance on this from someone who has a gravity system installed.

My gravity fed sieve is for clearing large crud before fines are removed by nexus. Having sieve infront stops it all being mashed by pump and allows nexus easier life cleaning fines. Also helps stop blanket weed and means nexus is easy to clean twice a week.
Am pumped to nexus and gravity back to pond. Works great.

That's exactly what I'm not understanding.

I always thought that in a mechanical filtration system, the coarse comes first with the fine after.

I must be misunderstanding the purpose of the sieve. I thought that the Nexus would only provide medium particle filtration.

If the Nexus WILL filter below 200 micron I need to look elsewhere for fine particle removal issues.

    Many thanks for clarifying that.

There are a few advantages to having a sieve and a nexus one beening longer periods between cleaning and a reduced chance of large crud such as leaves blocking the nexus.

I use filter wool on top of shower for fines down to about 5 micron. With the nexus I believe the 220 upgrade using K1 micro is excellent for fines too. Other than that the Draco drum which slots in the 300 series is an option for around £1000.

    Ultrasieve and Neuxs gravity fed

Looking at the diagrams from EA, I can't get my head around how much water will actually pass through the sieve AND the Nexus with this arrangement given that water will surely take the easy option and skip the sieve? I would like to be sure that all of the water will pass through both units. Does anyone have much experience of this?
