leave first bay empty for settling of debris then convert 2nd bay to static k1 with an air disk for cleaning and 3rd to aerated k1,bit like a nexus does but in seperate stages, ive seen one of these theyre not small so you should get loads of k1 in it,,,andi

Thank you guys.Yes it is very simular to the cloverleaf. Its probably 15-20 years old now and ive had it from new.
The 2 large foams have started to fall apart, hense the update of media.
Was thinking along the same lines as you andikoi.Just wondered if anyone had converted one and had been successful.

There was a chap on here a few years back that asked the same question but I don’t know if he actually did the conversion.
It’s only a big plastic chamber after all so shouldn’t be too tricky.
Some kind of mesh in the bottom so you don’t lose any K1, add some air, bingo
Or you could fill it with Japanese matting?
The only issues I see are
1. Decent mechanical (poo) filtration first
2. How you deal with really fine bits

Thank you guys.Very helpfull.I did like the ideal of Maurices static k1 with a topping of jap mat(or similar ) to stop the fines and bigger waste items from the bottom drain. This would go in the 1st vortex chamber, with a moving bed k1 in the 2nd vortex. As for the 3rd chamber ,im at a loss.Would like to to have a good system to take care of the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate cycle.

depends whether your bothered about cleaning, you could put brushes in 1st, static k1 in 2nd and aerated in 3rd,brushes would need taking out to clean, but static could just be boiled with air and drained off,,,,andi

Hi Steve I modified a nitritech some years ago by putting an answer 410 in the 1st bay followed by static k1 in 2nd and fluidised k1 in the 3rd.
I can say that it worked well but required cleaning weekly and was a bit costly to run.
The water parameters were always spot on but I got fed up climbing in and out of the filter bay to clean it so in the end I got rid and installed an easydrum followed by moving bed bio tank.
I already had the k1 so the total installation costs were about £1600.
It’s the best thing I have done in the last 40years and would advise anyone who is going to invest in any improvements in filtration to save their money until they can afford a drum.
The pond is clearer without me having to do anything and I have more time to spend on looking after my koi and enjoying being around my pond with a beer.
My pond is 5500gals with two bottom drains and about 20 koi.

Thanks Rog.g.Can I ask how you blocked the overflow chamber to stop the k1 going into the next vortex.
Hopefully I can do the same as you in the future. The easy drum sounds ideal.

It’s a bit involved but I was lucky as I had access to a small company that made up some stainless steel bits and pieces for me. I will try and find some old photos and come back to you. In the meantime start saving for a drum as it’s the easiest way to go. If you have room for a Nitritech you will have room for a drum and a fluidised bio,
Rog.

Found a couple of old photo's I posted 4-5 years ago showing how i modified my Nitritech.
Difficult to see but I blanked the exits of each bay with a sheet of stainless steel just fixed in place with self tapping screws straight through the filter wall, they had a 4" hole in them to take a pipe through to the next bay, [I suppose you could use a sheet of plastic or similar instead of stainless].
I blanked the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd bays with a circular piece of perforated stainless steel to prevent the K1 from escaping when the bottom drains were opened, these had air stones/pipe fixed to them [the 2nd bay with the static K1 could be turned on to agitate and clean and the 3rd bay obviously had air on continuously for the fluidised K1.
The static K1 was covered with a piece of jap matt and held down to keep the K1 compact.
I blanked the end and drilled holes in the 4" transfer pipe for about 25cm [you have to get as many holes as possible drilled or the flow of water will be restricted].
You can just see in the photo that I had to fit a large piece of perf 2"-3" away from the outlet because the original small piece got overwhelmed by the K1 and restricted the flow.
Hope this of some help
Rog.
