Having had to upgrade the pond electrics when I installed a heat pump I could no longer use a standard plug in energy monitor so I went for one of these:-

The clip needs to clip around the live wire of the supply. If you have a simple house system you could just put it on the house supply and monitor the whole house - but we have 3 phase and a lot of other stuff going on, so I decided I needed to isolate the pond.

I also needed one of these:-

The benefit of all this is that it allows me to monitor the energy usage in the pond using my pc/phone from anywhere where I have an internet connection. I can see how often the cleaning pump goes off - when the heat pump is on and how long it takes to defrost etc. It also lets me know exactly how much I am spending but that is less interesting lol.

You can easily see the drum clean interval - at this time of year once in ~50min. What was more interesting was looking at the trace while the heat pump was operating.

volt drop.JPG
I had previously suspected that the heat pump was struggling to come out of defrost and this shows why. What was happening was that when the heat pump turned on it caused a volt drop on the cable which meant my two blue eco pumps switched off (shown by the repeated dips down to only a couple of hundred watts. They immediately switched back on, but because they have a 10 second delay the heat pump had already registered the low flow and turned itself off again! The additional drop in power (after 9:30) was when I switched my water pumps on to a separate supply (temporarily an extension lead from the house) which solved the problem. I have now switched the pumps back on to my old supply cable which luckily was still available. I am not sure how long it would have taken me to work out what was going on if I hadn't been able to see graphicly the energy usage.

Any way I am impressed with the monitor and as all the data is downloadable I see lots of happy hours spent analyzing data and working out how to optimise things
