    Quarantine build and set up

I'm thinking about making a quarantine set up and was wondering what's the best or easiest way to go about it.

Was thinking maybe using a IBC, bottom drain, sieve, fluid media blue barrel filter, UVC and a pump.

Would I also need extra bio between the sieve and the fluid media blue barrel filter?

It's going to be housed in a concrete shed or garage depending on how much room I can clear so not sure if it would need to be heated?

As it's going to be in a semi dark area would it be advisable to install lighting for it and have it on a timer?

Auto feeder required or just hand feed?

Auto top up required or not?

I have already got a sieve, blue barrel filter and UVC going spare so thought I'd use them instead of buying something extra in the way of filtration.

Would a 3500 lph pump be OK for this or would it be worth getting something a bit bigger? Probably depends on what size tank I go for at the end of the day really.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it's basically the same as a pond set up only smaller and a bit more specific to the fishes requirements if I'm right in my thinking?

see if you can find a fiberglass qt going cheap,i had an ibc originally and didnt like it,the white seemed to make fish skittish,i just had a small blagdon pond filter on mine with a 3,500lp pump on,had 2 200w aqaurium heaters in it,i would get a 10w daylight led flood only about £15 and cheap to run,if your using just as a qt then ideally you could do with having some mutts of some sort to keep it running, you dont want to be having to set it going every time you need it,auto feeder good if your keeping running constantly, also a trickle in good or you will be cleaning it lots due to small amount of water, andi

NIce one Andi, good point about the IBC as it makes sense. If I can't get a fibreglass one could I use an IBC but just put something round the outside to darken it as also if it has got heaters in it it would be a good idea to insulate it with Kingspan or Celotex etc?
So you think the sieve and blue barrel would be a bit of an overkill?
I'm assuming as it's going to be indoors I won't need a UVC like I first thought?
Good idea on the daylight LEDs.

it was the colour inside that made them skittish i think,if you could get a black on that has been used for food stuff would be better, just be careful what theyve had in them,i remember vince that used to come on lost all his fish due to it being used for paper glue or something, you could build one out of timber and use a box liner, the sieve and barrel would be ok ,nothing like filter overkill lol,you could plumb uv in and see how it goes,if needed use,if not then its there incase, andi

hi mate if you go to my pond build Fred pond build mate i had my QT grow on built by hand. there is photos and the build during the thread. starts on page 48. built from wood frame and boards
and then lined inside and out with celotex. fibre glassed. i suppose you could of put a liner in with bottom drain. anyway its all on there. heater, controller, timers bottom drain. filtration.
i use a day and night light strip light for my fish colour. plus with my other light.
    it lights the shed up.
heating wise i use a titanium pond heater.and controller.IF you are using it for QT as well as grow on. you have to have heat to heat and to grow them. my opinion this is a must
    my light is on timer
my shed heater is on timer as well. but only use this in winter. mainly for condensation . if i have my heater in the easy pod set at say 18c. i set my stand alone electric heater on timer at 3 hors on 3 hours off. and it keeps the condensation away. as i don t have covers. i don t like them.
i don t have auto top up.
i just do a water change once a week 30% . it took nine months to mature. so obviously i was doing water changes twice a week. then. i could leave it now for a few weeks. i have easy pod then 2x 100 water butts.and a 450 super fish pump.

fibre glass qt would be cheaper as andy said. plus a lot when i was looking had bottom drains all ready in them. they just did nt have them my size. what i mean by that is the height.
in my case with a couple of little grand bains. i did nt want them sneaking in and falling in. so had it hand built.

another good point andi came out with was keeping it mature. by keeping a couple of mutts in there. in my case. i have been growing on for the last couple of years. but from next summer i will be putting my rudd and a couple of gold fish in there. as now my pond is full once the ones in there now have developed.
    hope this helps
    fred

Thanks, I know what you mean about being careful about what was in the IBC before.

I've seen some small set ups on ebay that are about 100 gallons? Think it was gallons not litres?

I suppose if I use a filter that's too big I don't need to put loads of bio media in it do I as it will just take too long to mature properly if at all. Could always start off with say 20 litres and add to it later then add a pond bomb or similar?

Box liner bespoke build is another possible option.

I'm assuming the 200 watt heaters would be not ones that have to be plumbed in they would just sit on the bottom behind a grill or something?

When I set up my Eazy Pod earlier this year I bought 50 litres of K1 so I have still got 20 litres left so could either put half or all of it in the barrel filter.

I would like to keep as much as possible pipework and fittings wise out of the tank itself as I currently have a Koi that keeps knocking scales off in the main pond so thought if I could get this done ASAP I could put it in and let it fully recover before returning it to the main pond again. I was thinking that as at first it is just going to be set up as a damage recovery the system could be linked to the main pond somehow to speed up the filter maturing if that makes sense? If it was solely for health or infection purposes obviously it would have to be separated completely from the main pond. Also if it was linked to the main pond the filter running that would then also run that while the extra K1 matures etc.

Is this a possibility or am I over thinking and over complicating things?

You could use your pond filters to get it matured quicker. But like you say it would need seperate filteration. Once it sets out to be a sick bay.

overthinking, keep it simple stupid lol,its a qt or grow on,the heaters i had were aquarium ones, just dropped in end of blagdon box filter on exit, find a fiberglassed qt with a bd in and buy it,then its just hook up and have a filter inbetween, keep it as a seperate system to pond, andi

rather than keeping fish you don't want, keep a bag of media in your current filters, once used in anger bleach with KMnO4, household CL, or KOH, and then once you know they have been sterilised reseed in the filters.

For a minute I thought you were calling me stupid Andi LOL you are probably correct though as I always tend to overthink things and see problems that aren't actually there LOL

I've been looking at heaters and most are 1 kw and upwards so a bit of an over kill even by my way of thinking lol
