    Big pipe!

This request is a little left field, but I thought I would ask here because 'pond people'* have a habit of knowing where to source the unusual!

I'm after a piece of pipe.

    Roughly 1m long at most.

    But ...

It needs to be clear rigid acrylic.

    And...

    Diameter of around 500 - 600

With a wall thickness at least 6mm

I have a secret plan.... But not a plan that is worth spending a thousand pounds on a new bit!

In my trials and experiments on chemical dosing systems for water, I've used thick wall acrylic tube in sizes up to 300 mm diameter and the cost was in the region of £200 plus vat per meter so, especially with the low demand for larger sizes, the £1200 price on the website on the link doesn't surprise me. How important is it that you can see inside or could you rethink and use PVC pipe instead?

I'm not surprised by the pipe as at that size it's cast rather than extruded so very much more involved to make. However its's till about 10 times what i'm prepared to pay!

It's essential that its clear - much less essential are the specific sizes.

I have a fall back plan of making a square tube from thick acrylic sheet or laminated glass - but tube would be ... sexier...

That explains the news item I saw a while ago - a baffling medical issue - The first person to suffer from Gill Flukes and a load of fish with a bad case of Athlete's Fin

Good luck with the build Alan, the cylinder route is surely a safer bet than an extended cube due to a constant water pressure on the internal surfaces which you should have in a cylinder.

Water pressure is pretty low - I am only considering something at most a metre high - I imagine using it as a column for putting an armorial sundial on top of.

Any well made aquarium will have enough inherent strength to cope with 1m of head.

What I am more concerned about with a square sided form is the unknown knocks like the neighbourhood cat jumping on it or the local squirrels trying to hump it (seriously they're randy little buggers) and tipping it as impact on the corners will have more effect than bashing the circular surface.

Also I think the smoother outside might be aesthetically more pleasing than the abrupt diffraction from a sharp corner...

As I say it's only an idea at the moment - I shall continue to dream and plan and hunt - but any suggestions welcome :-)

Thanks for the link AJM - that's one of the vids I had already seen - its a little comic. And i think the guys doing it really haven't considered where the centre of gravity of that aquarium now is, how much a risk of toppling there is and because of the water how much impact that will have if/when it lands on somebody or something.

Fun for the experiment I applaud them - but not something I would leave unattended!

My intention has been to find a way of securing it suspended above the pond floor.

This would only go in my garden fish pond with small goldfish - i dont think I would expose larger fish to it or expensive Koi with the various edges ....

Just hope they painted or coated that steel frame or it will start rusting and contaminating the water.
