Just a up date aquafort is offering to replace the screens with 120 micron mesh ones ! That sounds large to me is there a drum out there with that size screen? And it seems that they are just ignoring the fact that it still leaks fines round the end seal. What do people think

I think it’s worth asking why, I.e. I had 70 micron and you want to give me 120 - are they thinking these will have better longevity (life) than the previous or something? It’s a pity they wont just swap the whole unit; they seemed like a decent Company when I spoke to them over in Holland.

We've been asked by Cotswold koi for some of our mesh to help out with this. 58 micron and certainly a bit tougher than most - they use it in the oil industry See if I can get Rob to post on here when he sorts it

Thanks Tony that would be a big help if am stuck. Yes apparently there thinking is that it is a bigger mesh so should last longer but it still does not solve the original problem of fines getting past the seal on the end of the drum

Not quite true. However, as a general rule of thumb, the larger the holes, the larger the diameter wire to make the mesh in the first place - something we paid particular attention to. You end up balancing robustness (size of the wire itself) versus "open space" (the percentage of the mesh that isn't actually wire). Ours comes out at around 38% open space. The problem is, if you want to boost the flow rate but still get the 70 micron or below filter rate, something has to give and that is usually the wire diameter and hence the robustness.
One way round it is to glue the mesh to the supports, so there is effectively shorter threads making up the screen. Virtually all dutch trommelfilters use this method - the downside is, if you do put a hole in it, you have to throw the drum body away and start again. An expensive and complicated do all round.
Hope that helps
BTW post a pic of the seal. I'll have a look

I fully understand the point you are making Tony - 100% agree and confirm its validity as related to Aquaforte drum - as I tested it and run away from it after just three weeks - having it on test from my koi dealer - I went for AEM Easy drum instead - this company is using very solid construction of their drums - so do not agree with your statement "virtually all Dutch manufacturers" - as the 70 microns mesh used by AEM is really solid - and based on what I have seen - yes - not tested in any lab - I would put both Draco and AEM mesh into the same league - or am I wrong please?

if it was me i wouldnt be accepting a bigger mesh, you bought a drum with a 70 micron but they want to change it for a 120,i think they think that with the larger holes there wont be as much water pressure pushing on screen,so will last longer,i'd be wanting my money back as not fit for purpose, they cant say theyve offered to fix it as putting a bigger screen in is not as it was sold,or as its specifications were sold to you,and offering to sell you new screens, ridiculous, tell them you just want your money back under the consumer rights act 2015,see sub heading 9 and 10,satisfactory quality and fit for purpose,id say neither of these this drum fulfills, andi https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2015/15/contents

I’m with Andi...
Also Selective Koi Sales mention in the Nishikigoi Yearbook (Vol. 4) these screens are fully removable/interchangeable so why not just give you some new ones?
I don’t think you bought it from SKS but they are the UK Aquaforte Distributor so for the cost of a phone call it might be worth giving them a ring; could they speak to Aquaforte on your behalf maybe?
If Aquaforte are thinking/saying 70 micron mesh is an issue, you might have to suck it up and just get the 120’s, does seem odd though.
I’d be wanting to get a message directly to Aquaforte; they seemed a genuine Company when I spoke to a couple of them on their Stand at the Dutch Koi Show - try ‘going over the head’ of whoever sold it; telling Aquaforte in the process that Koi Logic are, frankly, useless.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
