    Nexus Filter Mods

May be a bit basic but I am in the process of converting one of my old Nexus, believe 300, filters from pump to gravity fed, and before I do it I was wondering if anyone can give me a few pointers on a couple of things. Firstly I have a redundant "Easypod", and was wondering if I could use that as some sort of pre-filter before going in to the actual nexus, and would it benefit me in any way. I also see that there has been several discussions concerning modifications to these older filters to improve the efficiency / ease of use, anyone give me ideas as to what is involved there, the amount of K1 in both chambers is this a case of strictly adhering to the prescribed manufacturers amounts of does anything benefit from adding extra. Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
I'm new to to keeping fish etc
    I've got a nexus 310
As it has the eazy section in the middle as it makes it simple to clean
You can get a retro upgrade kit for the 300
It's 40 litres of k1 in the middle and a 100 litres in the outer bio chamber
I know a lot of people use the easy pod on their skimmer line
It might work better after your nexus with some micro k1 to polish your water
I'm sure someone with loads more knowledge will be able to help you more
    Cheers

Sorry took a while to respond I've been a bit busy of late, anyway I was contemplating using the easy pod in some way and probably your suggestion of after the nexus will be better, I have never had sight of this micro K1 so I am unsure if the central chamber will contain it or will it slip through the grill and end up in the pump?. Speaking of Nexus has anyone ever suffered any bottom leaks with this item, I was bemused at one time to find that the sheet of OSB / sterling board, it was sitting on was decidedly wet and I discovered that there was at least one very small, like a pinhole in the base which was the culprit. The only way I could finally locate it was to shine a bright light in to the Nexus, whilst it was on it's side and then a minute shaft of brightness was visible from underneath where the hole actually was, I had to seal it up with that Goldseal black mastic, but I am not sure as to whether there are other pinholes developing in it, of course EA had never heard of it happening before. Having now cleaned the offending filter out I will check for further faults before filling up, BTW there was a hell of a lot of right smelly crud lodged around the base, possibly this is the reason extra air is advised by some people. I have seen the upgrade for the 300, but as there are two involved it works out a bit pricey, so I will soldier on as before, and it doesn't take long to clean them out, I pump my waste out to the rainwater drain with an old Kockney Koi pump I picked up some time back so it really disappears quite quickly.
I was reading your bit about the pond build, and mine was a similar construction, solid base and then blocked up, but we have hollow blocks out here which are somewhat lighter than those solid jobs, then the top course and the ground level one are constructed from a U section block which, when the course is run right round the U section is filled with concrete and re bar, thereby giving a solid ring all the way round. Finish was a box welded liner, and that was dropped in after the bare block work and base were lined out with 2 inch polystyrene sheets 8 x 4, gives a smooth finish for the liner and keeps a bit of heat in. I've tried that P1 twice and had disastrous results, last pond I had in the UK I had to get it fibre glassed, after it leaked like the proverbial sieve, in fact the cost of glassing was less than all the tins of paint etc., live and learn, and my son used to sell box welded liners so I got it cheaper and it just dropped in the hole perfectly. Now I need to get a drain kit shipped out from the UK as they are not available here, and of course all the pipework is different, I did notice somewhere that there are a couple of European dealers listed on EA's website but after putting in their given www addresses , nothing comes up, and the koi scene is not that popular in France, every French person I have shown the fish to immediately asks for a recipe.

Hi there, I know this is a very old post now (!) but if I don't use my currently redundant easypod on a skimmer line, I was considering doing something similar to you - i.e. putting it after my Nexus and UV as extra bio/polishing.
Did you do this in the end and if so, what was the outcome, please?
    Thanks,
    Rich
