my pond build pls feel free to help me improve in any way

As mentioned in my introduction this is my first pond build and looking for advice on my choices and build but after reading the vast builds on hear , I can see I have under engineered my build a little 🤯

ok first of all my pond it’s built out of sleepers built in a space in decking left for years , but finally decided to build it as am trying to complete garden .
    Pond is 3200mm x 2400mm and 1100 mm internal sizes with pergola built over top . I have also left a viewing window recess of 1210mm x 610mm x 50mm recess to take a 1200 x 600 x 25.5 mm glass

Space left in decking for pond

First I dug out the back end 500mm to be level with front decking Then started building sleepers up on a membrane and 20mm some bed till level all round , then once happy drilled 12mm holes in sleepers and drove 12mm rebar cut to 500mm Long in each sleeper twice to stake it to ground . The staggered corners and joints on each level fixing each sleeper 3 times with 150mm 7mm screws .

Then when I got to the window height I started cutting the 50mm rebate as I built up the layers. Leaving all the makers edges on show at the sides and window.

As as shown in the pics when I built the last 4 layers I cut a 103mm square hole in each layer to slide the 100mm post down 4 deep and once squared the post off with the timbers shown , I then fixed the posts with the same 150mm screws in the 1st and 3rd layer down and this tied the lot together Sold .

C0AC1C82-1934-4DA8-8FD5-7BB9467B466E.jpg Pic of depth and screws holding pergola posts it’s on its side tho 😱

After post we’re square and solid I then started to cut the 150mm x 50 x 3600 long main joists working out the spacing for posts and top joists and notched for half lap joints . And fixed 2 each side of posts on both sides .

    D026ED8E-74BB-4D97-ADDC-1F3AA1B7C08D.jpg

Then worked out the best spacing for the 11 top joists 100mm x 50mm and half lapped all them and mitres all endings .

Pergola done for now , I will be adding black fabric mesh on the top as shade and adding trestles and decorate in time . And possibly going to drop it
    150mm / 200mm. Lower .

So thats pond as it stands now and after reading on hear the last day I have learned that it should have a bottom drain but was going to use oase filtoclear 30000 and 16000 eco pump returning the water through a 600mm long stainless cascade waterfall between inside posts .

Am now thinking al stick to the oase 16000 eco pump but use a oase bio tec screenmatic 40000 instead of the filto clear .

my only concern is founds for sleepers and bottom of pond as mentioned in other builds they used concrete base for sleepers and a sub base on bottom.

And the window recess is only 10mm total bigger than window size so will be painting the recess with liquid rubber as it’s the same material as my liner epdm .75 mm and have read that pu sealant is the best to stick to most things but epdm so am going to use EVERBUILD STIXALL Grab Adhesive Sealant Glue MS Polymer Bond 300ml Crystal Clear as just as good as any up mastic but better for my liner material.

Just going to fit the underlay and and liner nice nice and tight and cut a smaller opening than window and stick it in with ms to the pained recess with liquid rubber then once fixed use ms to stick the glass to liner and use the weighted ratchet strap method I seen on hear with window suckers till it hold amd
semi sets before I start filling .

only other things I have not mentioned is I have 20mm insulation and 5.5 mm ply to line it out and screw it with 40mm 3mm ss screws but also read on hear the water might crush the 20 mm insulation and show screw heads . What do Yous think so far thanks Liam 🤯😱🤯

Plug and play is easyer I'll give ya that one mate . Could you not put a hatch in decking just behind the pond fixed with gas struts for maintenance. As for water levels for gravity fed as away and the people will help with some great advice . One thing I would say is really before you do anything because it seems easy please ask it's going to be a t#at to fit a bd in mine now

Behind is only 300mm void would have to be out the side or thinking pump fed bottom drain but build a false corner inside pond and have the pipe coming up there and out . So no need dig under sleepers .

Agree with AJ. Bottom drain is the way to go. If you can t dig a drain in. Retro drain is better then nothing.
But gravity drain is miles better. If you talk to RS or andikoi. They are up to speed on sleeper ponds. And I believe they have bottom drains in there sleeper ponds

Do you know how much better filtration the 220 has over the 210 models and does the price justify buying the 220 over the 10 thanks

Afternoon all , thanks for the input on my build and from that and info off this forum I have decided to use a nexus 220 gravity fed filter running standard set up at first with a evo 55 uv and a aqua forte dm vario 20000 pump for 2” return split back to pond via 2” inlet low in sleeper wall and 1000mm 3 or 4 high Bakki shower balanced.

I have contacted Jbr plastics for a 4” air bottom drain . 2” inlet either straight or 45 degree , also pipe work to get me out my pond and on route . Also a pond skimmer to fit into my sleeper wall as build on the 200mm side flat 100mm high. With a 3” out let also gravity fed. All made for the liner.

Am going to pipe this in to the 4” bottom drain pipe work using a 45 degree lateral reducing T piece 4”x3” . Leaving the last joint a rubber clipped connection incase I need to run in via seive in the future . Rest will be glued .

    I also contacted lee a tufex and ordered my glass at 1200 x 600 x 25.5 .

So this time home am going to dismantle the pergola and pond back to the 2 layer and start again . Feel like crying but should of not started till I was clued up a bit first .

So correct me if am wrong but am thinking the nexus 220 will be good for the bio filtering side helped buy the Bakki shower so should be more than good enough on that side For my pond size .

4” Bottom drain aerated with 2” return inlet to help movement on the bottom.

The only side that might need upgraded is the mechanical filtering side in the future . If nexus can’t cope with fish waste and skimmer items with out cleaning every day . Time will tell . But if so could add sieve and change pipe work from 4”to 3” T Capp off 4” side and run 3” to sieve with second aqua forte pump with less pressure back to pond side and use 20000 pump from seive to nexus using the balancing pipe system

Or just put a Draco drum filter for nexus and keep pipe work 3” branching into 4” drain.

Hope am getting this right and getting my head round what’s needed now .

Put me right in any way pls .
    Thanks Liam .

Bottom drains and gravity fed seems like witchcraft to me. Just getting my head round it all too.
It looks really smart so far tho.

It would be more annoying to loose fish tho and to have to change things once it's wet would be a real pain.
