Sleepers for pond construction
Hello and firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section, mods feed free to move.
I currently have a small prefab pond which was put in by previous owners. I’m looking to remove this, level out the hole that it leaves so that it will be an area roughly 2 foot below grade. I am then looking to build a sleeper wall around 600mm above grade, some foam matting on the inside and then a pond liner.
Aiming for pond size of roughly 2m(L) x 1.5m(W) x 1.5m(D), should be roughly 5000ltrs.
Which will suffice for my ten koi that the previous owners crammed into the 1000ltr pond their currently in.
Anybody got suggestions of where to buy sleepers from other than the usuals b&q, wickes, travis Perkins etc.
Thanks
Paul

Thats too small for 10 koi. Thats 4500litres which is less than 1000gallons and the rule of thumb is 1000gallons per adult fish.
People do stretch that by running large filter systems but that is probably a stretch to far.? Hopefully someone more experienced can chime in.

Hi Paul and welcome.
You are asking where to buy sleepers under the presumption that your calculations of pond size is enough.
Dont want to sound rude but it wont be big enough.
For ten koi you should be looking at a minimum of 2500 -3000 gals as they grow fast.
Please dont be offended as that is not my intention just friendly advice mate.John

Sorry. Was half asleep typing my post. I should have said ten fish.
There is two koi, a few comet “gold fish”, a few fantails and two that I am yet to nail down exactly what they are.
As for the size, those are initial dimensions. No doubt as I build it will increase.
I’m going to put decking in around it so there’s plenty of space.

That's fine mate, but I would build as big as you can as you can easily regret it on the future.

Any idea where you got them from. Best I’ve found so far is £17 plus postage.

Thanks andi.
They’ve quoted the same price as elsewhere, but for four extra sleepers meaning I can get the pond size a little bigger.

Next question. What’s the best way to secure the sleepers. I was thinking of buying some 1m rebar.
When I lay a foundation for the sleepers to sit on, cast the rebar into the foundation. Then drill a 25mm hole in the sleeper and slot over the rebar, filling any gap with some form of resin. Two at each side, one at each short length. Then simply using sleeper screws in the corners, or possibly another rebar as that won’t be seen.
