Thread: My Pond Build

    My Pond Build

This is my 5500 litre raised pond build. I appreciate its quite small by a lot of standards. I'm only planning on keeping a couple of Koi and a handful of goldfish in it. If any one is interested I'll upload the plans for it when I'm finished. I'll also add more photos as the build progresses

After digging the foundation a 3 layer cement block wall was built.

Next the wooden frame which is made from 89mmx38mm CLS was cut to size and screwed together and held in place with ratchet straps.

    Some more pictures:

Concrete was poured into the cavity as can be seen above, then a frame was built up on top to support the waterfall pipework and the conduit for the lights.

The top section was then filled with concrete. This will support the coping stones. The inner edge was also made to be removable to allow the pond liner to be tucked in behind it.

    This weekend's progress:

Filling begins. It took about 4 hours.

The wooden edge that was originally used to cast the top concrete is used to form a neat edge around the top of the pond.
Eventually these pieces of wood will be painted with black pond paint. Each length is held in place with a couple of stainless wood screws so that they can be easily removed to allow access to the pipes and 12V electric cables for the lights.

    Testing the waterfall.

All the coping stones are now cut and just need cementing into place.

They are blue/black limestone from B&Q. They have quite a rough edge as they are really intednd as paving stones, but we thought they went well with the wood.

    Latest picture:

    20191006_154630 - Copy.jpg

The build is almost complete now. Just need to bury/sort the filter and fix the coping stones behind the bench but may have have to wait until spring now.

Any suggestions on plants? My wife wants a waterlily, but from what I've read it would be best to wait until next spring for that. I guess some pond weed in the bottom of the pone would help with the Nitrate?
