Filter woes
Hi Bazza, yes I thought it was good of them to come all the way from Kent and had hoped he’d fixed it but a week on it packed up yet again.
the whole lot was only purchased a few weeks ago so it’s not good that it’s broken down so many times and so soon. Seems to me that they’re asking a lot of a small dia spindle from the motor right across to the opposite side and used just a few grub screws to secure it when the drum is such a large one.

That doesn’t sound great Stevo. Which model did you buy? I’d be interested to hear what they come up with for a solution....

Quick update - I seem to get 24-48 hours at a time now but manufacturer has now offered to send me a new spindle with the flats ground off that the first one should have had so the grub screws can grip better. Will be fitting this over the bank holiday and hopefully this will be another step in the right direction..must say though the idea of rotary drum filters reducing maintenance has been a total myth so far as I’m out there most mornings and evenings sorting out various probs.

Thanks for the update Stevo. Is this something that has already been rectified in the design then do you think?
please keep us posted I’m close to pulling the trigger on my drum setup and the Burton is up there.
cheers

Afraid not Bazza - altho the engineer has been great, there’s only so much he can do given that the design and quality of build is so poor. If I had my time again I’d def go for a different model. I might even be tempted to go the sieve route as these things are just so temperamental if this one’s anything to go by.

So your general view is that this is poor quality all round rather than just the drive spindle issue?

Hi Bazza I’ve had a few issues tbh - the drive spindle is one - which was supplied without the flats for the grub screws but imho the grub screws aren’t great either. Additionally, ours was supplied with a leaking water valve and no bush on the motor spindle which the engineer remedied.
However, after the engineer left I’ve noticed the metal gear doesn’t line up with the plastic gear ( it’s only on by 50%) and that has caused it to jump a few teeth which I’ll be taking up with them, when they’re bk on Tuesday.
Personally I feel the problem lies in the fact the motor and gears are at opposite ends of the housing so it’s expecting a lot of a 4-5mm spindle and a series of grub screws - perhaps if they d designed it so the motor and gears were coupled closer it wouldn’t be under such a strain.

So another update - after the gears chewed up on the drum, Burtons engineer came and swiped out the necessary parts AND brought with the a new bio filter to replace the one that had a crack in the inlet pipe. Over and above what I’d expected and thought I should give the credit where it’s due. They also fixed a broken pipe bend in the drum filter where the bypass pipe sits and a new rod in the malfunctioning motor spindle. Hopefully I’m not jinxing things by speaking too soon or saying everything is now functioning as it should.
