    Moon pond extension

Thought I'd start a post on here for the pond extension me and my dad have started and the plans we have, partly to have a record of it but mainly so you can tell me when we're doing something badly or wrong! Have spent the last couple of months researching and getting ideas, mainly from this forum but also YouTube videos etc.

The pond in its current state is roughly 2.5mx2m and 1m deep, pump fed biotec10 filter down a waterfall:

As you can see its a bit wild with the plants, plan is to try and keep it looking as natural as we can.

Plan is to extend down the garden but to also dig another foot or so on the existing pond. The garden is on a slope so we've dug a trench and made a footing and built a wall upto the water level of the pond.

We'll be putting a bottom drain in and skimmer where the hole in wall is. We bought a drum filter 2nd hand on here (filtreau20) so the bottom drain and skimmer both fed into this, then some form of moving bed filter which needs to be ordered/built.

Need to build or buy some sort of shed for the filter area which will be here somewhere once we've taken out some of the conifers:

We've dug the hole both sides to get the bottom drain pipe out but still need to do a bit more digging on the extension before we take the fish out and put them in a pool while we dig out the existing pond. We've done a fair bit but still so much more to do before we can start to see the finish line and I can tell you digging by hand is not fun when you're encountering flints like this:

Don’t envy you digging with stone in the soil, have the same problem here. Good luck and look forward to following your adventure

Spent the weekend trying to figure out where and what the filters can go in and how much space we need, we started to cut back the conifers and couldn't believe how much more room we have up the side of the garden/pond. So now thinking of buying a narrow shed to use as a filter house, issue being the filter would have to move further up the garden and changes the layout a bit. I'm thinking the skimmer can't stay where we planned originally as its too far to pipe it up to the filter, am I right in thinking this will reduce the draw we get from the skimmer?

Anyway here is the extra space we've opened up and potentially more if we need it:

This is what I originally had in my head:

    Now thinking more like this:

I wanted the water to flow anticlockwise round the pond, will this still work with the new layout? Is the skimmer better suited at the end of the pond rather than the side?

    Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated

I think we are going to keep the skimmer where it is and have it running on its own pump and not filtered. This way it will give outlet at the bottom of the pond and increase surface flow. It will mean emptying the basket every now and then no big deal really.
